Well, Kurt Cobain killed himself, putting an end to Nirvana.

I guess the answer is "Kurt Cobain"

Not to dismiss the contributions of Cobain, but there were PLENTY of other great grunge bands during that era, some of whom, like Pearl Jam, are still touring and putting out records. Personally, I was more upset by the disbanding of Soundgarden than I was by the demise of Cobain/Nirvana.

I've only heard it being called grunge. There are pros and cons of each. Grunge is a pretty accurate term semantically, and "Seattle Sounds" is inaccurate as far as you refer to one genre of one period, whereas Seattle is also famous for Jimi. That said, "Sounds" is a collective noun, better portraying that they all sounded diff.

Am I the only one who doesn't really like Nevermind?

You guys should listen to the Pixies, whom Nirvana were clearly influenced by, and incidentally one of the greatest, most infulencial, most under rated and under appriciated bands in the history of music. They, in my opinion, can enter that hall with other truly great bands such as Velvet Underground, Wire, the Chameleons, etc.

noone killed Nirvana - cause this music won't ever die. you can Kill a man called Kurt, but you'll never kill his music. Other grunge bands - they are just bands without names, without faces - so you will never know them.

We will allways remember and listen.

Agreed, and I'd also add Superunknown by Soundgarden as being not only one of the best grunge albums, but one of the best albums of the entire nineties, a great decade for music if you ignore the Spice Girls.

You are suggesting that Nirvana is the only Grunge band with any talent. This is definitely not true (for example, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney are amazing...). Perhaps Nirvana is the most notable, but I disagree strongly with the statement that Nirvana is the only band that will be remembered.

(EDIT)Add soundgarden in there too, Chris Cornell will most certainly be remembered as a Grunge great..

I don't think so.

Only people who are into their music really know much about bands like soundgarden, pearl jam, mudhoney, etc. people however, who do not know their music won't have a clue who these bands are. They may recognise a song, but be unable to name the band or whatever. However most can see Cobains face and tell you he was in Nirvana and tell you some of nirvana's songs. Thats the iconography that Cobain and Nirvana have come to represent.

I agree with you that other bands are as good if not a hell of a lot better than Nirvana ever were, but partizan604 is right.

Cornell in my opinion is one of the great vocalists of the last two decades, but most people I imagine will only know him as that guy who made the dodgy James Bond song. Its a pity, but thats just the way it is.

its the same in every genre of music, take the Indie scene. Everyone in britain knows who the Arctic Monkeys are and who Pete Doherty is; but they won't have a clue who British Sea Power are, despite BSP being one of the best acts on the circuit.

I like some grunge (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, "The Rooster" by Alice in Chains, and "School" by Nirvana) but I really hate most people who like the whole Nirvana/Cobain thing.

Cobain was very, very over rated. Most of his lyrics did not mean shit, people just compare him to Ginsberg and say "oh hes thinking on such a deap level man!" but thats just wackity wack.

I'm guessing you're one of the few people like me who likes In Utero the best.

Ten by PJ has a few good songs but also cack.

Superunknown by Soundgarden is a friggin mint album. Now that's dark! What should my followup purchase be SG-wise? Which one's Jesus Christ pose on? Me luv'z Soundgarden.

nirvana were good but pearl jam were much superior. mainstream grunge died in 1997 when the pioneers of grunge soundgarden called it a day and split up :(

Jesus Christ Pose is on the Badmotorfinger album. If you like the psychedelic aspects of Superunknown, then you should get their follow-up album Down On The Upside.

I grew up with Nirvana, and they've always been one of my favorites. Soundgarden and Pearl Jam never really floated my boat. The Pixies are indeed awesome, I must say.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Sonic Youth? Those guys were (and still are) awesome.
