hajduk what happened to all sides in this fucked up war was bad but i dont think you should concern yourself with these things which are used mainly now as propaganda by nationalists on all sides. though what happened is sad the fact remains when we get to utopia things such as this will not matter anymore for things such as religion, culture, ethnicity, race, etc wont exist to warrent these things happening anymore. raising awareness of these events is a good thing but painting one side as good and the other as bad is biased, one sided and unfair for every side did good and bad things it is just that to some people what they did was bad whilst to some it was good. also no one piece of land belongs to a certain nationality it belongs to all the proletariat of the world. and bosnia and herzegovina doesnt just need revolution the whole world does! say no to state socialism and socialism in one country hajduk!

Serbs are actually Serbs. They are by 'regionality' Bosnians, but doesn't change the fact that they are by nationality Serbs: they speak Serbian language, and most of them draw their origin from old Serb areas through migration.

Well, if we're explicitly talking about land, at least 85% of land that is covered today by mentioned entity was in ownership of Serbs. See, after land reforms during WWII, Orthodox and Catholic population which was, long before Austro-Hungarian anexion, in feudal submission to Muslim landowners (that descending Ottoman Empire left behind as feudal lords) and later, renting that same land for further cultivation, gained that land. On the other hand, Muslim population remained strong in the cities, so Serbs and Croats were usually small landowners, and Muslims lived in the cities as mostly predominant population. Of course, this is not a generalization, because there were cities and regions with reverse composition. [See 1991 Census (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/Bih_1991.jpg): blue Serbs, green Muslims, orange Croats.] Today, this situation changed as there was a huge exodus of people: Serbs and Croats fleeing from cities in Central Bosnia, Muslims fleeing from other, "outter" cities. It just so happened that war time territories gained their contures by rural composition: those parts of Bosnia with predominant Serb population became autonomous territories when war begane, and Muslim controlled Territorial Guard (something like irregular, home militia-army, used for defence in former Yugoslav state) gained control over predominantly Muslim areas. When the civil war was in full swing, there was much homogenization, or "cleaning up": enclaves were usually falling (thus, Srebrenica Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srebrenica_massacre)), while big chunks of ethnically controlled territories were merging.

Tuđman and Milošević did in fact reach this agreement, but it fell through when NATO refused to acknowledge this "holy" alliance. It simply put pressure on Tuđman to break with his Serbian counterpart. One has to be sober and admit, if this agreement was ever put to practice, there would be quite different unfolding of events.

Now, as far as radical fundamentalist Muslims are concerned, they were brought here by a request of Bosnian Government headed by Alija Izetbegović (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alija_Izetbegovi%C4%87). His own Islamist views were very well known even before the war. See: The Islamic Declaration, in which he denies any peacefull coexistence between Islam and other religions.

This is one of the most idiotic, most nationalist projections - which prefers to hide itself behind all-Bosnian "unitarism" - that I&#39;ve heard in years. Hajduk is actually suggesting that ethnic composition never changed drastically in 800 years.

For everyone else to know, this is simply false. First off, original Bosnians were never considered a separate ethnic group from the tribes of Serbs, and numerous sources prove this (among others, heir of ban Kulin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ban_Kulin), founder of medieval Bosnia, Matija Ninoslav (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matej_Ninoslav), in his document to the free city of Dubrovnik (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubrovnik) speaks of people who inhabit Bosnia as "Serbs".) Byzantine sources also prove this: see geographic composition (map) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Serb_lands04.png) according to De Administrando Imperio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Administrando_Imperio).

Bosnia spread its territories southeast to what used to be Rascian territories in Hum and later Trabunia, but it also spread to west, over the rivers of Vrbas, and to southwest, over Neretva, where it annexed areas populated by tribal Croats (see map of Bosnian expansion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bosna.jpg)).

What used to be old border between Hum-Rascia (medieval Serbia) and Bosnia it also used to be a western border of Orthodox Christianity, namely that of Serbs, while Bosnia either remained Pataren (Bosnian Church) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_Church) or it was Catholic.

When Turks came, conquered Serbia (1371-1459) and Bosnia (1388-1463: years of Turkish campaigns until final victory) and took big parts of Croat territories, these religious borders (as they were old feudal borders) simply began to erase themselves, either by destruction of Bosnian Church, or by constant migration of ethnic-Serb, Orthodox population; finally, Islam came with Turks, and brought new divisions: old feudal class was either destroyed (like in territories of XV ct. Serbia, like in Bulgaria, Greece and Hungaria - where religious traditions and organizations were deeply rooted) or it was integrated into the new Ottoman class system by accepting Islam (as in old Bosnia and Albania - lands where there were no stable religious institutions). Of course, landlords weren&#39;t the only people who accepted Islam: peasants, town folk and others, converted as well, mainly for economic reasons. This, notably, happened in all areas, but highest rates of conversion were in areas for their lack of religious tradition (as mentioned), and, of course, towns.

Hajduk is suggesting that Serbs in Bosnia are no Serbs but "Orthodox Bosnians" (that they are by ethnicity Bosnians, but this again would mean that they are either Serbs or Croats by ethnic origin, especially because they speak Serbian or Croatian language), but how is it possible that Orthodoxy breached its centuries old borders (that were even retreating) by 300 miles northwest in one Islamic Empire where its own existence was rather questionable? Not only that: it gave a whole new religious composition to most territories in that spam - those territories became mostly Orthodox (odd, isn&#39;t it?). Only possible explanation already exists as a fact: migration.

I will not get into whole migration politics of Ottoman Empire, or explanations about this or that special status (such as "vlachs") but I will mention that old mountain dwelled areas populated by shepards managed to repopulate whole areas devastated by previous wars (northern Serbia - about 80% of today&#39;s population draws its origin from far south - areas I speak of; also, south Pannonia, whole mountains that encircle Dalmatian coast, chunks of Bosnia, etc.).

Hajduk is suggesting, firs off, that all Bosnians are of same ethnic origin - which can&#39;t be true, as we can see - since it is of overtly mixed origin, and two, that Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Islam exist here by mere accident. According to these two false premises, Hajduk is trying to convince you that all Bosnia exists as one nationality. But what do we do about 400 thousand Serbs who lived in Croatia before the war... are they "Orthodox Croats"? So how come they speak in different dialects that suppressed old, medieval dialects that exist only in territories that Turks (Ottomans) didn&#39;t reach? How come we know for a fact - we have thousands of pages of Ottoman documented material concerning annual census, taxation, etc. - that this population that exists in Bosnia today has a very mixed, two-fold character, and that most of this population came from areas that never were a part of old Bosnia?

In fact, three nations exist today in Bosnia. Croats, Serbs and - what we call today - Bosniaks (Bosnians). If we take a look at the entire history of these regions for last two and a half centuries, we can see that these nations formed themselves on the bases of language and religion combined. Serbs and Croats emerged with Serb "bourgeois revolution" after 1804, and Croats emerged as a nation during Napoleonic wars, which gave nationalist drive to many different areas of Europe.

Formation of Muslim (&#39;Bosniak&#39;/&#39;Bosnian&#39; from 1990.) national identity began as a reaction to national composition of Croats and Serbs, that was largely determined by the church (on both sides). Thus, Serbs in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia became Serbs by nationality, determined by their religion and language, and conditioned at some extent by their origin. Catholics that spoke Croatian became Croats by nationality, and those Serbs that took Catholicism (like allot of families in Herzegovina) identified themselves nationally as Croats. This increased in intensity when Ottoman empire left these areas after 1912. Thus, formation of these three nations in Bosnia was largely defined by religious division. In 1970&#39;s Muslims in Yugoslavia got their full national rights, and just before the war they assumed new national name: Bosniaks or Bosnians. It just so happened that bourgeois leaders of Muslim population that lives in Serbia (over 500 thousand) tend to call themselves &#39;Bosniaks&#39; by nationality while in fact they have no real, ethnic, physical or cultural connection with Bosnia.

Now, instead of these confused, frustrated people who believe that by forcing this Bosnian unitarism they are doing something to &#39;unite&#39; people in Bosnia (like Hajduk), we need cool headed internationalists, who don&#39;t invent or construct new national identities, who don&#39;t accept new national experiments of existing class society, who simply take upon nations as creations of rising capitalist society (or sick inventions of a descending one) but who accept them as an existing fact, who fight nationalism as a means of class politics, who rise over all identities and roles created by capitalism (including nations) and who don&#39;t choose formal identities (again including nations) as a field of struggle because they know such struggle can only have negative effects. Internationalists are those who choose, above all, class identities&#33; By this they don&#39;t forcefully erase all borders and attack identities created by class society, "natural" or imposed, conflicting (like Serbs, Croats or Muslims) or "uniting" ones (like "Bosnians"), but - on the contrary - transcend them, searching and insisting on unity in a feild most important and most real of them all: class struggle.

That&#39;s because I hate all-Bosnian national identity just like I hate all-Serbian national identity, but you identify your own with some "unity" and "peace" and "land", while I don&#39;t have any illusions about "my" or any other: I think of all of them as products of class society (but you wouldn&#39;t understand that now, would you).

I personally think that if the Serbs of the Republika Srpska wish to separate from the rest of Bosnia-Herzegovina and join Serbia, they should be allowed to do so. Denying this is like denying the national self-determination of the Serbs.

the only reason bosnia exists is because of religion&#33; not ethnicity or culture. if you take away islam, catholicism and orthodoxy then there would be no difference racially and culturaly(except for religion)between the bosniaks and serbs and bosniaks and croats. the majority of the so called bosniaks are racially serbs and a minority of bosniaks are racially croats. there is no such thing as bosnia racially it was invented by the ottomans to distinguish between muslim serbs and christian serbs with a small sprinkling of croats. there never was nor should there ever have been historically a bosnian ethnicity or nation for they are the same as serbs and croats except for religion. why the muslim serbs and croats let religion get in the way of the united slav ideal is beyond me. but this is unimportant because what is really important is proletarian croats and serbs whether they be muslim or christian uniting to destroy capitalism. petty nationalist arguements are stupid and are unconstructive to the proletariat. remember when the revolution comes we will do away with race, nations, governments, etc.

Spartan: you&#39;re mostly right for the historical part, but - as I&#39;ve explained - it is a fact that Bosniak nation exists; it is there, it formed its own national identity, and most Bosnians "feel" as such. There&#39;s no such thing as "rightful" national identity, because all of them are formed according to the rise of bourgeois society in certain material and cultural conditions.

It&#39;s only a problem when this identity wants to be imposed on everyone else who, as you note, cannot accept it (what Hajduk is trying to do). You&#39;re absolutely right to say that "when the revolution comes we will do away with race, nations, governments", which is completely opposite of Hajduk&#39;s "revolutionary" and "antifascist" proclamations against everyone who doesn&#39;t want to sympathise with his national identity.

It&#39;s also a problem if in this process, history is radically twisted and turned against formal logic itself. Thus, people invent "ethnic" originality in a place were that is completely impossible and irrational, or they invent new languages for the lack of "cultural heritage" that would "boost up" and "maintain" nationalist recomposition.

Alcaeos: I could agree with you, but I would personally be against it (I believe in national peace and stability if basic Dayton accords are kept alive) for one, and second thing, I believe it&#39;s currently impossible and irrational, just as it&#39;s impossible to "unite" everyone into one centralized state. Former would cause economic problems and more pressure, and latter would create only more tension and unemployment - and who would respond to it? "Revolutionaries" and "intellectual guerrillas" like Hajduk (as he prefers to call himself)? Ri-ight.

Of course, everything is out in the open. We can never tell what would happen, but we can assume correct position from the start.

Serbs of Bosnia are Bosnians. During Yugoslavia serbs in bosnia used muslim words. Republic Srpska is a reminder to my people that they ethnically cleansed us and massacred us, it shouldn&#39;t exist. When Yugoslavia they called themselves Bosnians with an Christian Orthodox religion, even Croats before the war said they belonged to Bosnia and not Croatia. When i was in Belgrade this summer, the majority of Serbs there recognize the &#39;Serbs&#39; of Bosnia as Bosnians, as they give the true Serbs a bad name.

it&#39;s important to realize that bosnia and the former yugoslavia never got to socialism. in fact tito&#39;s yugoslavia was the first "revisionist" state even before khrushchev&#39;s coup in the ussr.

the inequalities between different sections of the federation (mainly breaking down on a north-south axis, with slovenia and croatia the most wealthy) were more and more polarizing, not being broken down, by tito&#39;s policies and those of his successors.

the balkan region today has become a chessboard for global imperialist contention, and the various wars that take a "national" or "religious" character are expressions of much bigger contradictions than they seem. (just like the so-called "catholic vs. protestant" conflicts in northern ireland)
