1. Did the Soviets and their allies commit atrocities during the war?

2. Would any of these atrocities have happened if the Islamist wackos had not been supported by Washington?

3. Did the people of the Soviet Union support the war prior to Washington's intervention in favour of the lunatics turned it into a bloody stalemate?

1. Yes, the soviets commited attrocities in Afghanistan.

2. Most likely. The red army, by that time, was not acting with a socialist character. They went into Afghanistan acting like occupiers, so i won't exactly shed a tear that some of them got skinned by mujihideen.

3. Hard to say. From what ex-red army soldiers who served in Afghanistan tell me, they were pretty psyched in a primitve patriotic way. As the war went on though, like all soldiers, they became less enthusisatic.

The people at home were only getting a heavilly doctored story of the war. Ironically, an ex-red army soldier told me that the soviets actually did a better, more democratic job reporting the conflict in Afghanistan than Canada or anywhere else is doing now. Considering how heavilly censored the soviet account of Afghanistan was, it speaks volumes about Canadian coverage of our current war.

I heard that the soviets infamously raped many germans as "vengeance" of being treated as "untermensch" in WWII. I googled it up and I did get results, however I don't know if any of it is hearsay or not.

Possibly.

War is a very complex scenario where normal morality cannot be applied.

Well the question should be Did the PEOPLE OF AFGHANISTAN supported the Puppet Regime installed by the Soviets ? That is the million dollar question that is very difficult to answer.

The problem did not start with the CIA support of Mujahideen. It was manifested right from the beginnings of Occupation by the Soviet Bureaucracy. The Soviets were never benevolent in their interest in Afghanistan. Their occupation was driven primarily by their own self interest - to form a circle of client satellites to defend their own borders, not because they wanted to improve the lives of a common Afghanis. That is the reason their reforms from above failed to mobilise the popular support in favour of them and against the Mujhahideens.

The Afghan adventure of Soviet Union did give a very valuable lesson for any future revolutionary armies - you cannot "Liberate" people, People have to liberate themselves.

Did the Soviets and their allies commit atrocities during the war?
Yes, there were certainly many civilian casualties as a result of the well documented use of landmines, carpet bombings, and indiscriminate use of force in certain operations.

Would any of these atrocities have happened if the Islamist wackos had not been supported by Washington?
Yes, such things are almost always inevitable in war.

Did the people of the Soviet Union support the war prior to Washington's intervention in favour of the lunatics turned it into a bloody stalemate?
I don't think there was much enthusiasm for the war to begin with since it was a decision that was made by the top leadership alone. Whatever support there was certainly faded as the war dragged on and as casualties mounted.
