This Article talks about bottle water and its impact. A very interesting read, though I suspected it was bad this article show how bad this trend of drinking bottle water is becoming. Silly cappies, its funny how much money people will give to Coca Cola for bottled tap water.

I like how this has been a greivance of mine since I was about 12 and I always told people that Dasani and most others are "purfified drinking water" aka tap water in a bottle. People always blew me off and even now 6 years later I still here people telling me " oh my god did you know that dasani is just tape water?"

When my mom was a kid, she had water everywhere. She could access it everywhere, even if she was locked out of her house she could drink water. But the capitalists said "FUCK NO! I don't wan't the people owning a basic necessity! I will bottle and sell it!" Now, I have to go out, and search for water, like my ancestors before me!

For those of you who don't have a connection fast enough for youtube (I was one of you until recently), here's a transcript.

We care so much about health, that during the last 25 years, we've destroyed water. Because when I was a child this (pointing to water bottle) was the simplest thing of all, this was the essence of life. And when you were thirsty; that's the opeartive word, ladies and gentleman, the word is and has and will always be thirsty, not hydrate, they made that fucking word up.

I could go anywhere in my house when I was a child, there was 3 or 4 different rooms, and I could go to my basement and get clean water. And drink it. And then go back out and play. And those were great times. But then we decided, every town and every village, which had water coming to it, and all they had to do was clean, said we'll save money. We won't clean the water so much, and with the money we can save, we can go buy the water at the supermarket.

Go through this logic with me. Our country had water coming to its homes. And even if we were locked out, we could get it. And we said "No! Fuck You!". I don't want it to be that God damn convenient. I want to drive, and drive, and drive, and look for water, like my ancestors.

So we now buy water from Coke and Pespi. Because when I think clean water, I fucking think of Coke and Pepsi. The water they sell, is actually so shitty, they won't put it in Coke and Pepsi. And that's not funny, because it's fucking probably true.

Aquafina; I think it means the end of water as we know it. There's all sorts of spring waters, it's bullshit! No-ones ever seen a spring! Nobody's ever fucking seen a spring! Ugh-huh, there's no such thing. When's the last time you've said, "Boy, I want to go to a bottling plant."

You know where spring water comes from? There's a couple in Pittsburgh, that sits in a bathtub, and fills these fuckers up. Because that's how stupid they think we are. They think we are so stupid, that on many bottles of spring water, they print the nutrition facts. The nutritional facts of water! How dumb do they think we are? It's as if they believe we fell asleep on a nuclear reactor. And our brains had melted. And we are nothing more than meat with eyes. "I wonder how many calories there are on water let me look!"

Total fat, total fuck fat in water. What that implies is, is that there is water, with chunks of fat in it. I gotta find that water because that's the tasty God damn water.

And if that weren't enough, they print next to the calories and nutritional facts, all of the zeros that are there, they print the percent of our daily requirement. If they think we're that stupid, the labels on spring water should just be written in crayon, with the "R" reversed, and a middle finger like this.

When I was a kid, and water was free, nobody ever told you how much water to drink. 4 glasses of milk, nothing about water. But then, they started bottling water. And as soon as they started bottling water, they said 8 bottles a day. Eight! Eight you fuckers! That's like a God damn homework assignment. I can't remember what day it is, now I have to remember how many bottles I've drank. Fuck you! That's 56 bottles of water a week, you need a burrow to carry that much shit around.

And if you don't drink 56 bottles a week, many doctors say at the end of the week, you should take a garden hose and shove it up your ass. Here's the kicker, you're going to love this: scientists have done experiments to find the effects of water on our system. But guess what? We're probably drinking too much water. And by the sound of your reaction, I can tell some of you are FUCKED! You've been scarfing this shit down. You've been yelling "Look at me, look at me! My pee has no color!" That's because you've pissed all the nutrients of your brain away, and you're lucky your head hasn't caved in.

There are people who walk out of their apartments, in New York City, every morning, of every work week, carrying a liter bottle of water, in a sling, as if it was a little baby. They're carrying a liter bottle of water with them, as if they were crossing the God damn Mohabe! "What if I never see water again?"

But the bottom line is, nobody knows. Nobody knows shit about health. I know this, because there was an article written a few years ago about a Gentleman living in the Bronx. The oldest man living in New York, 115 years old. Living by himself, and having no health problems. Getting around without any trouble whatsoever, and mentally sound. And they asked him what his diet was, and he said from the ages of 90-115, he narrowed his diet down, now consisting of bread fried in fatback, and 3 gallons of Thunderbird Wine a week. When they asked him why he didn't fry his bread in bacon, he said "because bacon is too lean.".

Imagine if he went to the doctor, the guy had been doing tremendously, and he had told him his diet, the doctor would've said, "What the fuck's the matter with you? You can't eat that anymore, you have to start a diet of fruits and vegetables. And if he had, he would've been dead in a week!

Because they don't know. They try to come up with these general rules of health. And they can't do it, it's impossible to do. Because everyone's health is different. What's good for one of you will kill the person sitting next to you. Every one of you has a health that is unique and totally different from everybody else. Because we, are all like snowflakes.

I've thought of two general rules of health, and I think these actuallly work. The first is: the good die young, but pricks live forever!

Interestingly enough, both Jon Stewart and Lewis Black are self described socialists. Jon Stewart describing his younger years as "really into Eugene Debs" and Black saying, "I'm really interested in socialism. But in America, more people believe in unicorns than socialism."

You can’t beat bottled water for convenience.

What?

Anyway, bottled water poses some health risks for humans. Bottled water can contain contaminants that could cause cancer over a long period of time. (Source) (http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/qbw.asp)

A couple of years ago, I seem to remember, a fuss was made by the Australian Dental Association about an increase in the amount of people who drank bottled 'purified' water as opposed to tap water, and their consequential teeth condition. Tap water, in Australia, has small amounts of flouride in it, which is added to protect the teeth of people drinking it...
But, I'm not sure about other countries.
I know some people will only drink bottled water because it apparently tastes better....
But I just can't tell the difference, to be honest!

Unless the transcript is somehow mistaken, this is flat-out untrue. Springs are a recognised geological phenomenon. Whether or not most bottled water comes from springs is another matter entirely, but to claim there is no such thing as a spring is completely ridiculous, like affirming the existance of lava but claiming that volcanoes don't exist.

Where does this guy think rivers and streams get their water from?

People with bought bottled water are nowadays seen everywere here in Sweden. I don't get it, we have perfectly fine tap water here. Nothing wrong with it (except in a few areas). In many other countries, I understand why people buy bottled water because their tap water sucks, but here? :/

I recall reading some information at a forum the other month (over at Environment House Geneva... (gosh I like name dropping...)). It said something like, that a plastic bottle used some enormous amount more water to produce then could be stored in it (10 times or more...?).

I also recall hearing recently about a study regarding two famous brands and Sydney tape water, no one could tell the difference.

So, based on environmental and taste reasons, you are better off simply bottling your own tape water. Oh, except that on aeroplanes you can't take your own water. You have to buy it! Bottled water is an enormous industry and airports make the most of it. I've flown a lot, and I can only recall ever finding drinking fountains in two airports (and in one, only one...). And I have looked around, believe me.

Just went back through the video and checked my transcript. Except for a missed sentance about deer pissing in the water, the transcript was okay (didn't include pauses, emphasis often didn't get put).

Perhaps he was making a reference to how "spring water" is actually well water treated with chemicals (http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/nbw.asp)?

In fact, about one-fourth of bottled water is actually bottled tap water, according to government and industry estimates (some estimates go as high as 40 percent). And FDA rules allow bottlers to call their product "spring water" even though it may be brought to the surface using a pumped well, and it may be treated with chemicals.

Or he was just plain-old mistaken, or just making a hasty generalization (no-one's ever seen a spring)?

Either way, I guess Lewis Black's comedy, the anger and ranting, doesn't translate that well to text. He can be a pretty funny guy, though.

I don't drink water. If I did, i would use my home's "water purification system" built into my refrigerator. I know the water is clean but more importantly it comes directly from the source. The machinery used to transport bottled water is shifty..at best. Water is a precious material and I like to know where's it's coming from.

One of the sources I mentioned in my first post.

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stor...007/2016797.htm (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stories/2007/2016797.htm)

The average American consumes 210 half-litre bottles a year. That's four half-litre bottles a week, and of course many Americans don't drink any bottled water, so there are lots of people out there who go through two or three bottles a day. The really amazing thing is that 30 years ago the average American didn't consume a dozen bottles a year, and so for Americans it is a completely new phenomenon, a new way of consuming water.

Choice did a blind test between Sydney water and the two most popular brands of bottled water here and people could not tell the difference.

Etc.

The same thing in the Netherlands, although bottled water is about 50 times as expensive and has lower quality standards than tap water.

I live in Montreal in Canada and we have extremely great quality tap water. Someone mentioned the fluoride in water, and yes we do that too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with tap water but you always have these little fucking preppy rich kids who tell you you are inferior for not buying your god-damned water in a bottle. It's ridiculous. Anyone seen that Fiji water, it used to be expensive as hell, it still is. Think about this, bottled water is more expensive than gasoline at times. I will admit that it is convenient at times when you are on the run but common(!), drink from your frakken tap. Who knows, you may even build an immunity or two.

When you pay for bottled water you're basically paying for the bottle, the chilling, and the convenience. It's not the water, it's all the accoutrements.

What I was in Japan this summer, I saw a vending machine which literally sold tap water. That is, the water bottles it stocked said right on their labels that they were nothing but bottled tap water.

And I bought some!

Why? 'Cause I was thirsty and it was 20 yen cheaper than the vending machine across the street.

That's the beauty of capitalism, it's ubiquitous and it works ...or at least it works as well as a system can when its predicated on exploitation and manipulation.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. You can have shitty-tasting water coming out of the tap in many places in the country, just run it through a Brita or Pur or whatever and leave it in your fridge and it will taste like water should taste. You're pretty much paying them so you don't have to purify it yourself and because you can't always get it out of your Brita when you're at work. Of course if your tap water tastes fine then by all means fuck with that.

Who the fuck moved this to Chit Chat? I would appreciate to be consulted before such actions are taken in Sciences & Environment, especially in cases such as this. The commodification of water is a serious problem today, definitely not 'offtopic discussion' for revolutionaries, and S&E is a good forum to talk about it.

Moved back!

Djehuti is correct about the situation in Sweden, here bottled water is mainly a snobb & idiot thing so far, as the tap water is perfect. But in areas with low quality or even contaminated tap water, wells etc this is a matter of life and death. Western multinationals controlling third world water supplies are one of the most disgusting aspects of modern capitalism.

Yet, today, more than a billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water.

That's capitalism's terrible flaw. It can't provide the economic development needed to meet even the most basic needs of masses of the world's people.
