When people tell you not to help people because you are removing any motivation for them to help themselves how do you respond?
Not everyone is always in a position/capacity to help themselves. Disabled people would be one example and some people under capitalism live under economically analogous situations.

I break out the sarcasm and say something like this:

"Perhaps you'd like to threaten them with a gun, just to make sure they are well motivated. Yes, yes, what a wonderful world it would be if we could inflict the maximum amount of pain and suffering on people who are in trouble, in order to motivate them to help themselves! Everyone should be forced to work at gunpoint!"
