I like movies. What i hate is the landmine field of shite that is HMV and Virgin, because lets be honest theres a lot of bad films out there that you only watch once and then turn into £17 dust collectors. For my benefit, and everyone else's what are your 'must buy' movies, by which im referring to absolute essentials, not the okay ones.
My list would include-

-Kill Bill 1 & 2
-Reservoir Dogs
-Pulp Fiction
-Clockwork Orange (RIP stanley)
-Full Metal Jacket
-Platoon
-Trainspotting
-The Excorcist
-The Omen Series
-The Alien series
-Terminator 1 & 2

probably a lot more poignant ones i should be ashamed for forgetting, but theres just some!

Uh?

Can you spell 'reactionary shite'?

Or is this just a post modernist thing because its documents a homosexual fighter pilot in denial in a machoist environment?
(the Tarantino analysis from one of his other movies but I forgot the name of it  )

you should care, if you call yourself a lefty, or anarcho-communist. Politics is not a fad, you have to see everything polictically. You can't call a hyper reactionary piece like Top Gun a good movie, when it's entirely against your political beliefs.

This thread should be moved to chit chat, since the intent is to list "good" DVDs and have no political basis.

Um, no it shouldn't. This forum is for discussion of films and literature in general, with a possible focus on political stuff. There are literally hundreds of threads that are technically about non-political films and they fit in perfectly well here.

Also, what's to stop this thread from becoming political? For people to discuss their favourite political (and non-political) films? You can't isolate and separate the two with regard to culture- everything can be read as political on some level.

Will post my list later.

What the fuck?

My political beliefs, especially something like Anarchism which advocates complete freedom, should not stop me from watching a movie I think is good.

Fuck off, you can't stop me from watching a movie I think is good. You call yourself a Lefty? Petty Authoritarianism, trying to tell someone what they like is reactionary shite or whatever other bullshit you said.

Also, Top Gun isn't against Leftist beliefs just because it's about the fucking military, that's ignorant.

The thing about Top Gun is, iirc, that it was produced with the US military- i.e. the military let the filmmakers use their stuff in return for a storyline that they approved of. This goes on in the film industry a surprisingly large amount of the time and means that filmmakers are essentially acting as mouthpieces of the state.

I see, I could agree with that. The movie doesn't seem tainted much by State influence, however. I wouldn't have known if you didn't tell me.

All the same, my central argument is that he can't dictate my preferences in movies, nor judge me as a pseudo-leftist because of them.

Yeah, and the DVD set for that movie is supposed to really cool. I'm not sure about any of it's details.

Gonna have to add Boondock Saints as well as V For Vendetta to my list, both extremely good movies.
