My screen-name is from the English translation of "War and Peace", which is probably my favourite book (so that's why it may be spelled differently/wrong).

I live in the United States of America, in the state of Maine (though not for much longer), in Portland, which is a small city of about 65,000 people within city limits (about 250,000 in the surrounding area). I dropped out of High School my senior year to help support my parents, who were having trouble getting work, and got my G.E.D. and am going into the Army (I can explain via PM why, but no, don't support the president or the war in Iraq... does anybody these days?).

I consider myself on the left side of the political spectrum, though my views have gone a little more towards the centre over the years. My dad is as far-left as you can get, though that hasn't driven me all the way into the neo-con camp just yet. :P

I'm for Universal Health-care, though I have my doubts that it'll ever happen (or that the government would actually do a decent job with it), and for improving our aging and somewhat inadequate education system (more accessible university, better-paid teachers). I went to a public school that ran out of paper (twice!) and wasted $30 million on wireless internet when the computers were already wired, and we needed new textbooks (that we didn't get).

If there's anything else that you'd like to know, please let me know via PM. I signed up to talk to people I probably wouldn't get the chance to meet/talk to otherwise (people who are probably a little more left than me: perhaps a great understatement  ). I've always found most people have something interesting to say, so I hope to do a lot of listening.

(I will be gone by the 9th for a few months, sadly, but hopefully I can check back in at some point and join some discussions).
