New Details on Pat Tillman's Death

From the time Army Ranger Cpl. Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in April 2004, the government's investigation, cover-ups, trickled lies, and invocations of security and privilege have made for a giant clusterfuck of a barrier to anything resembling the truth of what happened to him.

First, he was declared a hero, with the Army Special Ops claiming his unit had been ambushed by hostiles. Tillman was posthumously awarded a promotion, a Purple Heart, and a Silver Star, all based on a detailed account of a battle that never occurred, but had been invented out of whole cloth to solidify the myth that the well-known Tillman, who had given up a lucrative NFL career to join the military, had died a hero at the hands of the enemy.

But Tillman's family pressed for more details, probably because Pat's brother Kevin, also an Army Ranger and serving with Pat in the 2nd Platoon, A Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, knew immediately, as did the other Rangers present that day, that Pat was killed by friendly fire. And so a new narrative began to emerge, one that had Tillman tragically falling at the hands of his comrades while desperately but futilely shouting that he was a "friendly," that he was "Pat fucking Tillman, damn it!"

Congressional hearings began on the cover-up, as the Tillman family pressed on for the whole truth; in his April 2007 testimony to the House Reform and Oversight Committee, Kevin Tillman explained: "We believe this narrative was intended to deceive the family but more importantly the American public. ... Revealing that Pat's death was a fratricide would have been yet another political disaster in a month of political disasters ... so the truth needed to be suppressed."

And now, slowly, does the truth nonetheless push its way into the sunlight.

Army medical examiners were suspicious about the close proximity of the three bullet holes in Pat Tillman's forehead and tried without success to get authorities to investigate whether the former NFL player's death amounted to a crime, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

"The medical evidence did not match up with the, with the scenario as described," a doctor who examined Tillman's body after he was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan in 2004 told investigators.

The doctors - whose names were blacked out - said that the bullet holes were so close together that it appeared the Army Ranger was cut down by an M-16 fired from a mere 10 yards or so away.
In other words, it appears that Tillman was not simply killed in a tragic accident by friendly fire, but killed deliberately by his fellow soldiers.

The medical examiners' suspicions were found in over 2,000 pages of testimony acquired from the Defense Department by the AP via a Freedom of Information Act request. Also found, most damningly, was the total absence of evidence of enemy fire at the scene—"no one was hit by enemy fire, nor was any government equipment struck"—and congratulatory emails sent between Army attorneys for "keeping criminal investigators at bay as the Army conducted an internal friendly-fire investigation that resulted in administrative, or non-criminal, punishments." Details of the day Pat died, long treated as truth, have also been undermined:

It has been widely reported by the AP and others that Spc. Bryan O'Neal, who was at Tillman's side as he was killed, told investigators that Tillman was waving his arms shouting "Cease fire, friendlies, I am Pat (expletive) Tillman, damn it!" again and again.

But the latest documents give a different account from a chaplain who debriefed the entire unit days after Tillman was killed.

The chaplain said that O'Neal told him he was hugging the ground at Tillman's side, "crying out to God, help us. And Tillman says to him, `Would you shut your (expletive) mouth? God's not going to help you; you need to do something for yourself, you sniveling ..."
Nothing Pat's family—nor the public—has been told can be presumed to be true.

Congress is preparing for another hearing next week, with "questions lingering about how high in the Bush administration the deception reached." The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has requested documents detailing communications between the White House and the Pentagon immediately after Tillman's death, but the White House refuses to comply, citing, naturally, executive privilege.

The White House has refused to give Congress documents about the death of former NFL player Pat Tillman, with White House counsel Fred F. Fielding saying that certain papers relating to discussion of the friendly-fire shooting "implicate Executive Branch confidentiality interests."
Never mind that unassailable "confidentiality interests" seems simply to be, in this case (and countless others), shorthand for "the ability to lie with impunity to protect our asses," which is not a guaranteed right of the White House.

"The bullet holes were so close together that it appeared the Army Ranger was cut down by an M-16 fired from a mere 10 yards or so away." This soldier was very likely murdered. Our White House doesn't seem to care, except insomuch as its attempts to cover up his murder may be exposed. And, meanwhile, justice for Pat Tillman—atheist, Chomsky fan, avid reader, liberal—isn't of much interest to the war-supporting shouters of "Support the troops!" who themselves are busily trying to destroy another solider who doesn't conveniently fit their definition of what an American soldier should be.

Justice for Pat Tillman, and the truth being told to a nation who mourns him, seems, curiously, to be a uniquely progressive pursuit.

"Somehow, the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country. Somehow, this is tolerated. Somehow, nobody is accountable for this." -Kevin Tilman, Pat's brother

I still don't see him as any kind of hero or admirable figure, he did after all willingly join up to serve in what was an imperialist invasion and did so out of chauvinism. It is, however, nice to see what was once a darling of the patriotic right-wing turn on them and turn out to be an atheist Chomsky-reader who was against the war when the truth comes out.

That's the funniest and best part, Tillman could've been the posterboy for the war mongering americans. He was right out of a hollywood movie, NFL player gives it all up to fight of for his country, a guaranteed blockbuster.

Question is, did he discover Chomsky after signing up, or was he familiar with Chomsky before joining. Why would anyone who read Chomsky, join up an imperialist invading army? Either way, I shed no tears, but find the whole scenario amusing.

I dont really think the point is about how nice the guy was, the point is they guy was caught in "Friendly Fire" and that was covered up causing relatives much distress.

It disturbs me that leftists seem to miss out the humanism of a situation when that is exactly what they should be looking for first.

Pat Tillman had joined the army after 9-11, when the patriotism and protection of the country fever was at an all time high. Its a potentiality that he was a Chomsky fan before he ran off to the military and just got caught up in the patriotism swing, or maybe he just wanted to get out and fight, but that really doesn't matter because he was a person.

He was a soldier (I know, I know) who was murdered by his supposed comrades, possibly because of his politics, and it should be looked into.

Pat Tillman, Soldier, and an Administration That Laughs Off His Death
By M.J. Rosenberg | bio
Most revelations about this administration and how it operates are simply infuriating. It came to office with one goal: to do everything it could to redistribute wealth in this country. And, from day one, it effectively worked to take from the middle and lower income groups and give to the super wealthy. Its entire domestic agenda was dedicated to this goal which, I suppose, was better than if it had come to office dedicated to repealing the Emancipation Proclamation. But it settled for doing everything it could to gut policies put in place by almost every President since Teddy Roosevelt to improve the lives of ordinary people.

Then came 9/11 and it found a new raison d'etre: endless war. There would be a permanent Global War on Terror that would simultaneously boost its standing (creating a permanent GOP majority) and a produce a financial bonanza for its wealthiest supporters.

All this is maddening, terrifying and often heart-breaking. But the Pat Tillman case (although only about one man) demonstrates something that even I would not have suspected. I always thought that, for all their loathsomeness, the right cares about our men and women in uniform.

Yes, I know that they are all too willing to sacrifice them on the battlefield. But that is war and these people believe that all wars are worth dying in.

But now I see that they even have utter contempt for the individual soldier who dies on a foreign battlefield. Donald Rumsfeld and his GOP allies chuckled their way through yesterday's hearing on the death (friendly fire, murder, whatever) of the most famous soldier serving in the 9/11 wars, Pat Tillman.

This is the same soldier whose death they used to drum up support for the war, who they made a poster boy for it. But then he was killed (somehow) and it came out that he opposed the Iraq war, was not a Christian, and, worst of all, came from a family of troublemakers who demanded to know what happened to their boy.

And now Pat Tillman is, in the words of an army chaplain, "worm dirt." And his death, which may have been a murder, is one big joke to these guys. Rumsfeld, leaving the Committee room, dodged Tillman's family, not offering a word of sympathy. He feels none.

Read the rightwing blogs on the Tillman case. The once fair-haired boy is now a joke, his death just one of those things, his family a bunch of liberals who should shut just shut the f--- up.

Do these flag waving Bush lovers out there care at all about our soldiers or only about the Republicans? When they observe Memorial Day, if they do, do they limit their feelings only to those WW2 boys who hated FDR? Does any aspect of our common American-ness trump the ideological hate that is their life-blood?

Look at a photo of Pat Tillman in all his young patriotic glory. Consider that he gave up millions of dollars to serve in Afghanistan and then realize that the Rumsfelds and his fellow neocons cannot even work up enough interest in him to want to know why and how he died or even to sympathize with his family.

We are two countries. Fortunately, GOP/Neoconland is shrinking every day. But that country won't disappear as long as there are people in this land who are willing and even happy to see the best of our youth die in wars they cook up to advance their own hidden agendas. Pat Tillman was a man. His death and the cover-up is a metaphor -- for everything we have experienced as a nation since December 2000 when the Presidency was stolen.

Miss out the humanism in this situation? I ain't no liberal. I reserve my tears for the million innocent Iraqi civilians that have lost their lives in this illegal invaion. Written off as mere collateral damage without any coverage by the mainstream press. I don't care how many GI Joes die, they never should've been in this situation to begin with, so fuck'em.

I wish there were more Tillman's in the army, so instead of getting killed by their fellow soldiers, they instead turn their guns on their commanding officers.

Yes! You are no liberal, you are not humanist. Definitely not a revolutionary.
You excuse yourself by quite rightly prioritising the plight of the Iraqi people.
However this is not enough!
It is way not enough.

A US soldier might be someting between a fascist and a louse objectively speaking but if you keep them in that box, say they will never learn from the experience of war, say they are not capable of going awol or mutiny or that these forms of protest and revolution are trivial to the cause, then you are living in Leftist puritan
little world in which you will end up not shaking hands with anyone in case you get germs.

Even if you have no sympathy for a dead probably murdered leftist leaning soldier, then you ought spare a thought for his family or are you part of the (imperialist countries) anti working class sentiments part of the Maoist trend on this board

I fail to see any reason to be sad here. The guy left his superstar life behind just to join the military and fight a war of aggression against an oppressed nation. That makes him a criminal anyway.

Whether he meets his death at the hands of resistance fighters from the colony, or at the hands of his own comrades-in-arms, it matters very little to us.

Certainly its not enough. We must prioritize the plight of the colonized, AND we must actively encourage contempt and hatred for the invading colonialists.

Especially for those who leave their comfortable, luxurious lives and join the military in a patriotic frenzy. Their patriotism is reactionary, their actions are to be condemned, their death to be celebrated.

They will not revolt until the colonial resistance forces them to revolt, by making their lives hell.

Fine. :)

We are really sorry for the family of a supposedly left-leaning soldier who joined the military in a negative nationalist frenzy, in the full knowledge that he would be fighting an imperialist war.

We sympathize with the plight of the family and stand with them in this tragic situation.

'Friendly fire. is an important human issue especially if mutiny is on the cards. What the hell do you know about what happened? What gives you the right to make any assumptions whatsoever? What gives you the right to justify murder and put in the same bracket as the self defence of the resistance?
Really life is not that cheap no matter how wrong Tillman's behaviour was, however, qualified and rarified it is made. War is sick through and through. Even those who are in the right.ie the occupied, know only too well it is sick, hatred is not needed, just the will to shoot or lay a mine, plant a bomb or come in kamikaze. There is no real hatred for the soldier, just bloody bewilderment for what these occupiers are doing there and how they imagine they can stay.

Hatred is there for what is needed to be done, for what the occupied become in order to rid themselves of the occupiers. This well documented in the history of anti-imperialist struggles.

It is sad for a normal human being to see another human being cut down in the prime of their life.Moreso it it is detrimental to take anothers life,it is detrimental to live with Shell shock. It is detimental to live in a city like mine that the highest percentage of people who are homelss are ex soldiers. War is brutal and abnormal part of anything to do with sanity.
That is just so, and denying this says more about your own inhumanity than generally formed humanity or moreso a socialised humanity that fights against every form of dehumanisation. The war comes home in many forms bodies, wounded, mentally scarred, this disrupts the antiwar movement. We must mean that we support the soldiers by bringing them home. Hating them is not going to help anybody.

It is really getting bad when the inhumanity and ignorance of the war cheer leaders
can be equated with that of some anti-imperialists.

Suicide In The Trenches
by Siegfried Sassoon

I KNEW a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by, (who cheer when our soldier lads do die)
Sneak home and pray you’ll never know

My invented italics.
The hell where youth and laughter go.
