FWIW, California subsidizes fluorescent replacement bulbs, so they're real cheap. But they're also real hard on the eyes. I use incandescents for reading.

HA! In Venezuela (starting last year I think) the government is giving out massive quantities of those lightbulbs to anyone who wants them in order to reduce the nation's energy usage....
