The IRSP in Galliagh have said they seized a so-called 'runaround' car which was being driven by a 14 year-old boy in the Leafair area.
An IRSP spokesperson said that they were contacted by local residents who were concerned about the way the car was being driven. Activists from the IRSP, alerted by locals, found the car in Leafair Park and quickly arranged for the car to be disposed of. While we were waiting, these people returned and smashed the windows of the car. The person driving the car is a fourteen year old who is well known in the area for anti-community activity, she said. We are aware that their parents know exactly what these people are up to yet they seem to have neither the ability nor the desire to control their actions. The reckless way in which this car was being driven could very easily have led to serious injury or death and we were only too willing to remove this car from the estate, he said. The IRSP also appealed to adults not to sell cars to children and young people. We must question the motives of any adult who is prepared to sell a car to a fourteen year-old child knowing full well what the car will be used for. We are calling for a unified community response to this type of activity, he said.
