View Full Version : Memorial Day - and the Communists

Today it is Memorial Day for the Fallen in the Battles of Israel. As a communist who plans on refusing service in the military and who does not share the common Zionist views in his country, I am conflicted. On one hand, these fallen soldiers have waged wars in which I do not believe, but on the other hand, they are, ultimately, young men and women who have sacrificed their lives for my sake, and for the sake of my people.

It seems to me that this day is a day I should wholeheartedly respect, and I must honour those fallen soldiers. Even if they died in wars waged against Palestinian civilians, these are human beings which did what they thought right. Regardless of political opinions, human lives are precious and holy. So in spite of the fact that I am not a Zionist and oppose my country greatly, this is also a day of memory for me.

Thankyou, that was a very thoughtful post. It shows that Che-lives attracts real patriots from different countries.
I have come to the conclusion that a patriot defends his country from bullshit and lies.

I do not consider myself a patriot at all. I take no pride in being an Israeli, but I respect those who have fallen in the wars of Israel, just like I repsect American soldiers who died in the brutal war against Iraq.

I know I'll catch some flack for this, but I don't see how I can just let it pass.

How is it possible to honor those who died in an unjust cause, even if they "thought they were doing the right thing"?

What does the word "honor" even mean in such a context?

Surely it cannot be limited to physical courage, can it? All sides have "heroes" and "cowards".

We'll be having a "Memorial Day" in the U.S. at the end of this month. I won't be "honoring" the occasion or the dead...as I can't see anything honorable in their deeds. Most of them were fools and the rest were villains.

Where's the honor in that?

The lives of fools are no lesser than the lives of heroes. These people were pawns used by the Israeli government in its sick chessgames with the Arab corrupted regimes. I am showing my respects to human lives which have been lost in a tragic fashion.
