OI members: how would you define imperialsm in

How would you, an Opposing Ideologies member, define Imperialism? Why? What nations in history have been Empires by your definition? Are there any contemporary empires in the world?

The control of one nation's resources or populace by another. This is a very broad definition, but I think it just about sums it up.

So obviously, under this definition empires still exist today. The most obvious would be the USA, but France, China, the UK, Israel, and Australia are effective empires as well. But the real question is whether or not imperialism practiced by that of the USA and its allies is detrimental to the world's well-being.
