I was reading a book in which Mao tells his doctor that China needs tiawan, because the fear and hatred tiawan and the United States cause, motivates the people to work harder and unites them closer then anything else.

Do you all agree with this? Without Stalin constantly making different groups in Russia enemies of the people, do they think they could have became a super power? Without Tiawan and America pressure, could china be stronger? Without Al-qauda, could america be so united as it is right now(it seems after 9/11 they are more then before in their willingness to blindly agree with their goverment)? Isreal without all the hostital contries around it?

i'm a just wondering your view on it, does fear and hatred bring people together? or would the same results be achieved without it?

take care

I don't think the answer to that question will be known for a very long time to come.

Fear and hate are certainly strong motivating forces over a brief period of time; their long-term efficiency seems more dubious to me.

People become exhausted.

Fear and hate are powerful motivational forces... however, they are often used to gain support for fascists and tyrants! These are base emotions that can make people subversive to authority very easily. All you have to do is scare the population, convince them of some imminent danger, and they will line up behind you like pawns. This is exactly what is happening in the US because of 9/11 paranoia. The reason there is division in America is because Bush isn't doing it perfectly, and some of us are catching on. The government still lacks the propaganda-machine efficiency of Nazi Germany.

As for long-term effects of sustained hate and fear? Unsure, but read 1984, and you will understand that it is possible.

The best motivation for social change and mass uprising is not hate, it's love. It's not fear, it's determination.

i have been to thailand and india, two countries which i felt alot of love and kindness from the people whom i didn't know. Yet these countries are so poor. I went to Dubia also, and everyone there was basically assholes to anyone who is not a national of that country, and yet their very rich.

I thought about this for a long time, why are thailand and india so poor, yet dubia is so rich. Right now i think their poor because they don't have as much hate as other nations. Or another reason could be that their highly religious, which could cause the passiviness.

Anyways i'm not to change the discussion to specificilly these countries, i am just trying to point out why i feel love is good, but doesn't not equal as high levels of progress as hate and fear.(although love should be more motivation, from what i see, it isn't.)

Britain is the war was incredibly united during German Bombing Raids. So Fear of German Raids and Hatred of Nazism do cause unity i guess

Fear and hate certainly do have a profound impact on peoples. If you look at the production during WW2 and before then in the U.s.a you wills ee this. People work harder when something like this motivates them.

Of course fear and hatred unites people...at first, however after a while the peoples will get worn down
