The year 2007 marks the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of
Argentine-Cuban revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara by the military
dictatorship of Bolivia under the direction of the CIA. When they
murdered Che—a wounded combatant captured in battle—
Washington and its lackeys hoped that they had eliminated forever
the threat of a people’s revolution. The bitter truth for U.S.
imperialism forty years later is that Che’s example and ideas are
more powerful and resonant than ever among the oppressed peoples
of the world, especially in the Americas.
This year’s celebration of July 26th—the attack on the Moncada
Barracks of the US-backed Batista dictatorship in 1953 by young
patriots led by Fidel Castro that sparked the Cuban Revolution—
will also celebrate Che Guevara and recently deceased Vilma
Espín—a key figure in the Revolution from its earliest days. Their
example is today most heroically embodied by the Cuban Five—
Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando
Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez—in US jails for nine years, framed and
convicted for monitoring the violent plans of anti-Cuba terrorist groups
operating with impunity on U.S. soil, with the knowledge and
complicity of the U.S. government.
In the Spirit of Che & Vilma,
Stand with the Cuban Revolution!
