The origional, it is the only reasonable Rage album and certainly the only one buying, the other two are just poor imitations of that first album, which wasn't that amazing anyway.

Yea what the others said, the original and Battle of L.A. are pretty much the better ones, but Evil Empire gots some good shit like "Revolver" and "People of the Sun"

Don't BUY any of them. Just download all of them off of the net for free. Then you can make your own decision on which on is the best.

they're all good. If I had to make a call though the first self-titled album is the most revolutionary and thus the best

My personal favorite one is "Battle of Los Angeles". Then again, I'm a pretty big fan of them all around so I enjoy all of their albums (although "Renegades" is easily the worst).

Me too ;)

Has anybody heard of Hard Stance, Zack's early days band (it was a straight edge band) ?

I've heard of it, but never heard the actual music. Do you know where we can find it?

I like Battle of LA the most, though I enjoy all their music. Evil Empire is underrated. And if you can find a torrent, download the Japan-only release "Live and Rare". It has some good stuff on it.

Self-titled features a more nu-metal sound which was beginning to emerge in the early 90's, with its mixture of heavy, but tweaked guitar riffs and rapping vocals. Normally it is viewed as a person's best entryway into Rage Against the Machine. Highlights include "Killing in the Name", "Know Your Enemy", and "Wake Up", though nearly every song on the album was either used as a single or received massive airtime.

Evil Empire is radically different from self-titled because it is a major departure from the band's nu-metal roots. Guitar work, except for a few notable exceptions (i.e. "Bulls on Parade") is more stripped down than it was on self-titled and the focus is put on Zack de la Rocha's vocals and the lyrics. Lyrically, Evil Empire is the band's most complex album. Though it was released to largely positive reviews, it is usually seen as the band's least accessible work for the casual listener and generally forth on the recommended listening order. Highlights include "Bulls on Parade", "Down Rodeo", and "Tire Me".

The Battle of Los Angeles reversed the trend in Evil Empire, by placing more weight on the instrumentation than vocals. In truth, it is more of a return to the band's original sound in their self-titled album but with a greater guitar focus. It is critically regarded as their best album and its singles by far receive the most modern airplay of the four. Highlights include "Testify", "Guerrilla Radio", and "Sleep Now in the Fire".

Renegades was reversed posthumously after the band broke up in 2000. Zack didn't want the album released and the record label's (and rest of the band's) decision to do so is often regarded as a key factor in his decision to leave the band. Renegades is composed entirely of covers and re-imaginings, with absolutely no new material. Artists include MC5, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cypress Hill, and the Rolling Stones. It was undoubtedly the least successful of all four albums, though its singles remain staples of the Rage Against the Machine discography. Highlights include "How I Could Just Kill a Man", "Kick Out the Jams", and "Maggie's Farm".

The albums have been presented in order of chronology. Normally, in my experience, fans listen to the albums in the following order:

Self-titled
Battle of Los Angeles
Renegades
Evil Empire

Definetly get the self-titled CD, to me it is the greatest one.

I would agree with whoever said the self titled is the best one for a new listener. Although my favorite is Evil Empire.

You should get their self-titled, Evil Empire, or the Battle of Los Angeles. Renegades is a CD of RATM covering music that they liked and thought was "revolutionary." If if you have the choice between the three, I'd say get their self-titled. No matter what, you will def. get your money's worth.
