View Full Version : Baha'i anyone? - Pluralism or not?

Anyone with an unhealthy interest in Persian History or Middle Eastern Religion will no doubt have come across this interesting religion.

Baha'i is basically a religion based on the fact that God is so freaking big that one religion has never been the only religion. They believe that all religions are essentially just God's progressive revelations to humanity (This usually only counts for monotheistic religions and Hinduism/Buddhism). They believe in the Unification of the Human race, end of sexism, racism.... blah blah blah. The thing that seperates them from other religions though is, they are a more down to earth religion. Most of the problems that people had with the religion were answered by the main founders, and unlike having one big holy book, the founders of the religion basically kept journals and proverbs dealing with their experiences. Also, to add to the package, despite their small size they have accomplished things many other religions have failed to do for centuries, blah blah blah.

Check out http://www.bahai.org

My main reason for posting this, is that very few people seem to talk about this religion when they are explaining the faults of religion, and I assume that this is due to ignorance of it. I also like making topics.

The problem I have with the Baha'i faith (besides the fact that humans are never gonna become united, unfortunately) is that they still believe in a god. I don't. And even if there was a god, I don't see why I should bow down to him.

But, in all fairness, baha'i is one of the alright religions, and I've got nothing against them, unlike most other religions.

i went to the school of the nations in brasilia, brasil. it was a baha'i establishment. baha'i is a pretty cool religion, but the management of the school really sucked. there was this evil teacher there named priscilla, and we called her priscilla queen of the desert. which was quite unfair, considering that was a damn good movie. other than baha'ulla i don't remember much though. he was shot by the firing squad but then appeared later that day in some guy's house helping him out, then he went back and offered to really be killed this time.

Oh man, I never knew he was shot at. I thought he was just put in prison and ended up not there..... Weird. He was a scary guy.

nah, not scary. just eccentric and extremely benevolent. he was a good guy. i'm not so sure to what extent it's true that he divinely escaped the execution on that occasion but that's as the story goes. my best friend's family in brazil was baha'i. they were really mellow people. but then again, most baha'is are.

what's rather funny is, baha'is aren't supposed to smoke or drink but we (emma and i) caught the principal of our school smoking a quick one while we were taking the bus home. we lived on the same block, bloco 303 asa sul. ah, the fond memories.

#Moderation Mode

As per recent discussions about adding theology to the "Theory" definition, I'm moving it there since it seems to fit while there is no specific theology/philosophy forum.

As for myself, if the other mods would let me get away with it, I'd move all favorable discussion of religion to Chit-Chat.

Come on, Umoja, I thought you were a good guy. Please don't spam this forum with religion threads. If you want to bring something like this up, post it in the sticky "Communism & Religion" thread at the top of the page.

That's why I posted it in Chit-Chat originally. I hadn't meant to offend anyone by doing that..... Darn you Dhul! Redstar hates me again! *Runs off crying*

What?? So seriois discussions on religion end up in Chit Chat if they aren't totally condmening everything religion stands for?

Seems a bit odd, but if that's the policy, feel free to move it back. But who's gonna be the judge of what is pro- and what is anti- and what is in between? ;)

Thorny problem, Dhul.

Perhaps we could make this kind of distinction: if you want to talk about the beliefs of a particular religion (for or against), put it in Chit-Chat...or, if it ever gets established, Philosophy & Theology.

If you want to talk about religion as it relates to the struggle for socialism/communism, put it in the sticky thread at the top of this page.

I think that would work.

PS: My sincere apologies, Umoja...I should not have assumed you were "spamming".

It's cool Redstar, I still follow your teachings (except the boring Atheist stuff ).

Redstar: that distinction makes sense, I'll operate untill we have a firm decision on the philosophy/theology forum.

I guess the thread should go back then

Moving this thread back to Chit-Chat pending the establishment of the Philosophy & Theology Forum.
