I am actually very fascinated by the quarrels between the Black Panthers and the JDL, because even though both groups claimed to represent segments of society that was repressed, they still preferred to fight with each-other, at least locally.

How would you define the struggle between BPP and JDL?

A Jewish militant group, which has made some terror attacks. Their former leader, Meir Kahane, also was the leader of an Israeli national socialist/religious fundamentalist party named Kach.

I heard before it was a few members of the JDL inciting hate against the BPP saying they were using anti-semitic slogans .The JDL was very anti-soviet and thus seeing the BPP as communists had a natural rivalry to them anyway

The Panthers frequently traveled to Arab Muslim Nazi nations and met with the PLO terrorist mass murderers.

Panthers had links with the PLO ... another reason why the JDL must have had it out for them .
The JDL were pro-america, Pro-israel and capitalist . Their were loads of reasons why the two would hate each other

If you look into it its amazing to think the groups wouldn't hate each other .

The FBI's Strategy: Lying to--and Dividing--African-Americans and Jews

In 1969, the New York FBI office attempted to turn the Jewish Defense League against the Black Panthers, by sending the JDL anonymous reports of alleged anti-Semitic actions or statements by the Panthers. Eventually the Bureau chose Rabbi Meir Kahane, a mercurial director of the JDL, as the unwitting source through which to funnel and disseminate the false information.

The extremes of the late 1960s demanded hyperbole to get noticed, a tactic the FBI decided to embrace. Agents admitted that information passed to Kahane would need "some embellishment" to provoke the JDL into taking action.

So, resorting to stereotypes, the FBI's New York office penned a fake letter from an African-American World War II veteran to the JDL. The letter claimed that the fabricated veteran had been helped by "a Jewish Army Dr. named 'Rothstein,'" and had been "encouraged to remain in high school for two years by my favorite Jewish teacher, Mr. Katz." The "veteran" said he was upset because his son was a Black Panther who, after returning from Algeria, had hatched a plan to extort money from Jewish storeowners that would then be sent to "the Arabs in Africa." If the storeowners did not cooperate, their shops would be blown up.

Threatening Liberals and Fracturing a Tenuous Coalition

What kind of action the FBI hoped Kahane would take after receiving the letter from the "veteran," is unclear. At a minimum, the Bureau wanted to use the JDL to cut off Jewish funding to the Panthers and other African-American organizations.

The New York office proposed sending Jewish attendees at the fundraiser threatening letters from anonymous JDL members.

The letters urged recipients that "We Jews have fought too long and too hard to let ourselves be destroyed from within by a group of well meaning but foolish people who give aid and comfort to our enemies." Such enemies, according to the letters, consisted of any pro-Arab or anti-Israeli groups in the Middle East, including the PLO and Egyptian leader Gamel Nassar. The Panthers' Jewish supporters, of course, were the ones accused of giving aid and comfort.

By forcing these liberal Jews to choose between their own heritage and the Black-Jewish coalition, the FBI bet that the former would win out over the latter. Ending ominously, the letters reminded these Jews, "We know who you are."

Using the Middle East to split the American Left meant exploiting an already precarious trust between African Americans and Jews. In the FBI's opinion, however, no sacrifice was too great in the name of saving America from itself.

Meir Kahane eventually moved to Israel, where he led a radical Jewish coalition opposed to compromise with the Palestinians. When Kahane was assassinated in 1990, few knew that the FBI had hoped to use his rhetoric, and possibly his legions, against "radical" African-Americans.

It is noted the Rabbi KAHANE's background as a writer for the NY newspaper "Jewish Press" would enable him to give widespread coverage of anti-Semetic statements made by the BPP and other Black Nationalist hate groups not only to members of JEDEL but to other individuals who would take cognizance of such statements. ... In view of the above comments the following is submitted as the suggested communication to be used to establish rapport between the anonymous source and the selected individual associated with JEDEL:

Dear Rabbi Kahane: ... I have always thought that Jewish people are good and they have helped me all my life. That is why I became so upset about my oldest son who is a Black Panther and very much against Jewish people. My oldest son just returned from Algers in Africa where he met a bunch of other Black Panthers from all over the world. He said to me that they all agree that the Jewish people are against all the colored people and that the only friends the colored people have are the Arabs. I told my child that the Jewish people are the friends of the colored people but he calls me a Tom and says I'll never be anything better than a Jew Boy's slave. Last night my boy had a meeting at my house with six of his Black Panther friends. From the way they talked it sounded like they had a plan to force Jewish store owners to give them money or they would drop a bomb on the Jewish store. Some of the money they will get will be sent to the Arabs in Africa. They left books and pictures around with Arab writing on them and pictures of Jewish soldiers killing Arab babys. I think they are going to give these away at Negro Christian Churchs. I thought you might be able to stop this. I think I can get some of the pictures and books without getting myself in trouble. I will send them to you if you are interested. I would not like to use my real name at this time. -- A friend

It is further suggested that a second communication be sent to Rabbi KAHANE approximately one week after the above described letter which will follow the same format, but will contain as enclosures some BPP artifacts such as pictures of BOBBY SEALE, ELDRIDGE CLEAVER, and a copy of a BPP newspaper, etc. It is felt that a progression of letters should then follow which would further establish rapport with the JEDEL and eventually culminate in the anonymous letter writer requesting some response from the JEDEL recipient of these letters. On 5/7/70, [ ] both of whom have furnished reliable information in the past, advised that on that date approximately 35 members of the Jewish Defense League (JDL) picketed the Harlem Branch of the BPP in NYC. The purpose of this demonstration was to show that the JDL feels the BPP is anti-Semetic in its acts and words. Also on the above date approximately 50 members of the JDL demonstrated outside of the Bronx, New York BPP Headquarters for the aforementioned reasons. In view of the above actions by the JDL it is felt that some of the counterintelligence measures of the NYO have produced tangible results. SAC, New York to Director, May 21, 1970
