The goal of this thread is to provide comprehensive, accurate and accessible legal rights and activist legal information that can be used by a wide range people, across nations. And moreover to strengthen the capacity of activist organisations to develop effective activist legal support structures and approaches to the police, courts and legal system.*

I'm in America. You really think I have many rights to know? <.< Freedom of speech could land you under government surveillance, Bush can lock anyone up at will if he calls them "enemy combatants", Freedom of the press is obviously suppressed, political christianity is destroying freedom of religion little by little, and women's and minority rights are shot down the drain day by day.

hey, i live in the states too, I know exactly what you mean. Over here, anything you do that is "constitutionally protected" can land you in jail. Fuck, you have a 50/50 chance of getting tear gassed at any "peaceful assembly" (see article 1 of the bill of rights) you attend.

Question: Do you think having "rights" makes it easier for them to strip you of them? How can you have a right to free speech, and then a crap load of other laws saying what you can and can not say, and when you can say it, and what the government will do if you say it, etc.? I would rather not have the stupid right to begin with.

hey, thanks for the above link. That actually answered a lot of questions I had about arrest and the sort. I never really agreed with the ACLU because they work within the framework of the law. However, it is not an opportune time for revolution when you're in handcuffs.

Haha, Amen! That elicited quite a hearty laugh!

As for the Australian site, I've seen it before, it's a really really usefull guide, and it's going to be essential for the APEC protests in September >_>

no problem, comrade. they may not be openly radical to the degree we are, but ACLU have come to my side on two separate occasions and have helped countless other people across the the US & its territories whos rights have been denied. as far as i'm concerned as long as there is a legal system there will be need for legal defense, and mos def a need to educate each and every person on their rights.

after all, part of the reason the police and the state have such a practical blank check to abuse the american populace is because so few of us have any conception of the rights that we actually are legally entitled to.

hopefully this thread will help in that regard. personally, one of the most beneficial radical activities i've seen done in my city are organized free classes on civil liberties and rights. there's no shame in wanting to work within a legal framework in a society that uses that framework to abuse us and kill us. it's sad that a lot of revolutionaries fall into the trap of the cadre mentality, criticizing and discouraging this type of discussion, but the rest of us know the unfortunate reality that when activists leave the armchair and get out in the streets this type of information becomes invaluable.

hopefully this will turn into a great resource of information. honestly, i can't stress how terribly-fucking-important it is to know your rights.
