I just read this book in a week and it is awesome! Flaubert's prose is so beautiful, and his layered themes are amazing. Critques on adultry, marriage, the plight of woman, the old order ect. I'm sorry. I just feel that it needs to be said. Anyway, from any view point (I don't care: marxist critque, personal views, etc.) what do you all think? Its got to be in my top ten of favorite books.

I read it in high school about ten years back.--- Beautiful book. ---- But I got to say the most interesting character is the apothecary Monsieur Homais. What a bufoon! I would have to reread the book and some critical essays on it to give you a fresh appraisal. I'm sure Harold Bloom has some good articles in his critical interpretation series, including some Marxist ones.

I did find the apothecary and priest's banter entertaining, though my favorite charcerter was Monsieur Leon. (he was the clerk Bovary loved) He just seemed like the kind of guy that women should have, nice, sensitive, cares about more than their breasts.
