i havent seen meantion of this before.

The workers of Merthyr reclaimed proptery stolen by bailifs and re-distributed to its rightfull owners. 10,000 people attacked the army at a pub(Bourguoises' HQ) and 24 workers died and 16 soldiers also died. In the consiquent trials Dic Penderryn was killed on shitty pros. evidence

Not heard about that before either, so thanks for bringing that to our attention.

The article really emphasises what Merthyr Tydfill used to be: a thriving industrial town that rivalled Swansea and Cardiff. Now, of course, it's not. Indeed, its greatest claim to fame now, is that a street from Merthyr has been recreated in St. Fagans -- and if you've seen that street, and also seen similar streets that are still standing in Swansea and Cardiff, you'll see why Merthyr's dominance was temporary.

Basically, the impression you get is that the establishment wanted Swansea and Cardiff to last the test of time. To become cities. Where as they just wanted Merthyr to produce iron, until they no longer wanted it to produce iron.

and donny osmond has long lost relatives there

Its a very deprived town, home to the most deprived estate in Europ, the Gurnos estate. It used to be the main industrial town in britain, with a history of radicalism and protest

It's funny, as different groups use Dic Penderyn for their own ideological purposes: he is always seen as a nationalist hero, even though he was doing nothing for the nation! Gwyn Williams talks much about him, if you want to read more about it. And he's a Marxist.

Amusing Scrotum: I can't remember that particular street, but having been to St Fagans every year on school trips in Primary School so it's probably deep in my subconscious somewhere...
