You can learn some that way...also find people to converse with in Spanish.

First I would start with some vocab. Memoriz as much basic vocab as you can. When you got a few hundred common vocab words under your belt you can start studing the basic structure of sentances and verb conjugation; you can use text books, classes, computer software.

But if you want any fluency or ability to speak and understand the language in a comprehensable manner you must put yourself around spanish speaking people and practice talking with them. Even at a very basic level. Don't be embarassed. If you understand common verb conducations and can make full sentances try using them in conversation.

Suerte!

Yeah, it's surprising how quickly people can pick up a language just through talking with people who speak it as a first language. Case in point, I worked with quite a few Spanish people for a while, and whilst I didn't make any extra special effort to learn the language, I still managed to pick up a few phrases.

They were mainly dirty phrases though, like my favourite which I generally say to any Spanish couple who are leaving to go home, te bas a casa a foijat. (It's probably spelled nothing like that, but I suppose Spanish speakers will get what it means. <_< )

A friend of mine by contrast, who made far more of an effort to learn, can now hold a conversation in Spanish. Which does go to show just how important conversing with fluent speakers is -- the Spanish people learning English where I worked, always used to say it was far easier to learn through conversation than through a textbook.

So personally bcs, I'd say if you really want to learn the language, try to find work in a place with Spanish people. And the best places seem to be either in a Spanish restaurant/Tapas bar -- which seem to be becoming more common -- or in Spain itself -- where English speakers can find summer jobs quite easily.

Are you trying to say "te vas a casa a coger" - go back to your house to fuck? I don't know what foijat is, it could be a slang term?

Pimsleur seems to have a large variety of languages to choose from.

I got it via bittorrent. Try torrentspy

"Te vas a casa a coger" is used in some latin american countries. It's a way of saying 'go back to your house to fuck'.

What he meant was the Iberian way of saying it, "te vas a casa a follar".

In Puerto Rico, coger means "to catch".

However, we are aware that in other countries it means "to fuck" (in the sexual meaning of fuck, since fuck can be used for many things in english language.).

Follar...I don't know if they use it in Puerto Rico or even know it.

Maybe...

what i am doing is taking courses, listening to cuban music, bought a little "basic spanish book" and im reading poem by Jose Marti with a translation next to it. Next to that I also listen to Fidel's speeches, where I am picking up more and more words.

Another thing I've noticed for confindence isdrinking, 2 nights ago i drank some and had great discussion in german and spanish, which i would not be able to do as well sober

Assorted torrent sites offer it for free as well, mind that you have to download the Rosetta Stone program as well as the Spanish disk. My school offers it as well, so check yours.

When I learned French and Spanish in school, I found that the verb grammar was VERY easy to memorize. :)

Go to wordreference.com - they have a good English/Spanish dictionary. Quite user friendly - you can click on words in the translation.

The good news for you who want to speak Spanish is that you are very little concerned with learning pronunciation. A mispronunciation makes no difference in understanding you.:)
Besides, what about learning a vocabulary largely shared by Portuguese, Italian, French and Rumanian languages?;)

As someone who learned Spanish first and learned English as a second language and has taught ESL classes to adults, the best advice I can give you is two fold:

1.) If you cannot find Spanish classes that are affordable, then get a program at your local library or bookstore that include audio samples. Don't worry too much about learning a lot of verbs and vocabulary @ the initial stages. Getting key phrases learned is the best way to start.

2.) Practice. Practice. Practice. Language is a tool that needs to be used in order to be learned. Using Spanish once in a long while will not work on your skills.

Do you think its possible to learn through part time even classes and self teaching?Yes. IF you put what learned to work. Use newspapers. Surf Spanish-language web pages. Watch Spanish-language tv programs. Etc.
