I have very mixed feelings about cloning and I was wondering what your stances were on cloning. is it inherently bad or should it happen. would clones pose social challenges as how they should be treated? would they be the new slaves?

It would be nice to clone back some extinct animals and humans... I take it you are asking about human cloning though...

Personally I'm all for it, as long as the clone isn't in a lab like a rat. It should be like a child adoption service, not a circus. I don't think it should be seen as a terrible thing even if it is seen as playing God. Scenarios such as losing a family member, but being able to clone them and see them living and breathing again would be nice indeed. Or simply wanting a twin sister/brother you never had. It would be very surreal.

The only problem I can see with it is the upheaval of the population. Oh and genetically modified clone armies.

What are the negative aspects in your opinion?

basic the creation of a sub-class of clones that are treated like slave and used as such. also the use of clone as lab rats as you said. and super-soldiers clone that are blind killing machines of the state. these are my main fears. i think replacing a dead family member is bad, though it would be nice. once a person died replacing them with some one that is genetically similar will not bring them back, they will be a completely different person.

I'm completely pro-cloning; in a post-revolutionary society every human being should have a clone or two to use as spare parts. Obviously these clones would have to be created so that they'd be in a vegetative state, completely void of capacity to think or feel -- braindead if you will.

I have nothing against creating sentient, thinking human beings by cloning either, but these should obviously be treated as any citizen. Why would it matter to rational people how a person came into existence? There is absolutely nothing sacred about 'natural' procreation which would lift people born that way above the clones.

Check the Popular topics of discussion (http://www.revleft.com/index.php?showtopic=59257) -sticky, it includes several interesting threads on this subject. :)

We already have clones; natural clones which we call "identical twins". They don't seem to pose any real problems to life in society.

I think they're fantastic, and cloning should become commonplace. I read somewhere that eventually we can clone meat in vats. :) Think I read it in New Scientist, my favourite read.

Yeah, you're right. States that considerd banning cloning would be making it technically illegal to be or give birth to twins. Another brillaint move by the religious reactionaries.

We should allow cloning of cells so that we should be able to create copies of human organs which should be able to A] supplement needs for transplanted organs, B] give a humane alternative to animal testing, and C] eliminate the illegal trade of organs. We should invest resources in making all parts of this progress cheap and available for all people.

my problem with creating a clone just to use them for spare organs, is creating a person just for them to be killed Seems wrong to me.

Using them for testing would be exactly what I think is wrong with cloning it would be treating said clones as sub-human. and also how is using a clone any better then using other animal.

cloning for harvesting of blood, limbs, sperm, eggs, etc - yes.

cloning of complete people - No.

A spare organ could be created without creating a full body. Just look here.

A mouse is the host for a transplant ear.

A patient is the host for his own new penis.
