View Full Version : Best Leftist Punk Band

My first poll. I voted for Aus Rotten.
Propagandhi is absent, therefore I cannot vote. Actually, there are WAY more great left punk bands than this.

Good start tho.

thats ridiculous. admitedly, crass has some major flaws. for one, they have a ton of material that is... well... boring. but a song like, say, "big a little a" (to name just one of many) cannot be written off as some name-drop-only thing.

Because the Sex Pistols hurt the left that they weren't even a part of far more than they helped it, not to mention their zero musical talent.

My original points were:
1) they sound awful, and not in a good way
2) most people who bring up crass do it as a name dropping stunt to show how cool/punk/hard/etc they are.
Yeah I'm sure there are true fans out there and well, see #1.

god it was close between Oi Polloi, Aus Rotten, and the Dead Kennedy's
but Oi Polloi focues more on antifascism then leftism, and I think that while the dead kennedy's are great Jello Biafra is a dirty cappie reformist.
so Aus Rotten gets the vote.
also, I haven't been on revleft in months and, damn, its good to be back

The oppressed aren't radical leftists. And in my opinion the music is really hit or miss, especially when they use a damn drum machine. They do produce songs that everybody knows though, so that can be fun.
The upstarts, I'm not really a big fan of. They always seemed (to me) to be sort of embarassed of thier hard left politics. They could've been to RASH what the oppressed were/are to SHARP. The Upstarts sell RASH and redskin merch, play shows organized by RASH and openly acknowledge thier relationship with the left-wing of the scene, but they never come out and say we are a red band and we play for redskins. That bothers me.
As far as left wing skinhead music that should be represented on there:
Banda Bassotti
Brigada Flores Magon
Juenesse Apatride
Bolchoi
Redskins
Opcio K95
Anyone of those bands should be on the poll. Fawkes, are you from the states or somewhere in Europe? Eh, maybe just PM me.

I haven't heard anyone mention APPLE in ages! One of the members (Jane) was my close friend when I lived in the Bronx. We started a domestic abuse support group together, but we kind of lost touch when I moved away from New York.
Do you know what has happened to them? Are they still together?
And do you know of any way to get in touch with them mail/email/website/ect/ect? I'd really like to see how they're doing.

I didn't mean to imply that the upstarts were anything other than socialist. I know they are. I'm just saying they weren't as outspoken as they could've been. With those bands on my list there is no question as to thier politics.
The upstarts were and still are a big band in the scene, but they don't come out in support of RASH. Why? They came over here to the states and played a gig organised by RASH, and proudly displayed thier band name next to the three arrows. But they never come out and promote it like the Oppressed promoted SHARP. In fact, I've seen Roddy Moreno speak out for RASH more than Mensi.
Its not uncommon to come across trad skins here in the states that don't realise the upstarts are socialist, they think they're just left as in Labor party, traditional english center left. And they interpret the support for Solidarnosc to be anti-communist, mainly because the upstarts never came out and said "we're reds".

wel maybe you should listen to the song
RED TILL DEAD
If that isn't a 'comming out' than what is?
Mensi the old singer of Angelic Upstarts was actually a labour supporter. I thought that after a while he got dissapointed, but I've heard that he supported Red Action after that.
He's now replaced by a new guy.
Back in the days 'Oi' was a movement with meetings and a lot of working class politics was discussed back in the days. The first wave of oi bands really want to help/do something for the english working class youth.
In that time there was no such thing as RASH but....
Criminal Class played gigs for Rock Against Racism and Troups out of Ireland!
Infa-Riot also played for Rock Against Racism
and don't forget Newtown Neurotics, Red Alert, Red London and Attila the Stockbroker who also had a left wing policy.
and besides that almost every oi band took a working class stance. Even the Business with sabotage the hunt for example.

You can't say that the Upstarts were as militantly leftwing and as interested and devoted to the left wing scene as bands like the Redskins.
There was no RASH in the early days, true, but there has been for the past 14 years (approx) which is plenty of time for the Upstarts to come out and support RASH. They are easily the biggest band supporting the left wing of the scene, but they don't make it seem that way.

Yeah, the redskins were kind of a propaganda act. And mostly soul, but still very punk influenced. Nonetheless the fact that there were other bands taking a harder and more open stance for the left is disappointing considering the popularity of the upstarts. They really never were anymore supportive of the communist movement than Sham or other working class punk bands of the time.
RASH and SHARP are faaaaaaaaaaaaaar bigger in europe than in the US. Much much bigger.
If you're a leftwing skin and you don't support RASH I'd like to hear your justification for it. We need greater representation and organization in the scene, RASH is where that will come from.

I'm not a skinhead.
I'm Jaffe:P, I do listen to punk, ska and reggae, and I know a lot about skinhead history. I'm from Europa (Netherlands), there aren't many skinheads here (but we do have a lot of good hardcore punk and ska bands) .
1. Before there was RASH there were many left wing skinhead crews in Europe. Red warriors/ red boys/lenine killers etc. (Paris/France)Rote front and KB84 (Germany) and in the basque country there were the kortatu fans (a very big leftwing skinhead band) en maybe they weren't under the same banner they did share the same ideas. I don't think it's really necesarry.
for example; Some people are communist but don't want to join their local communist party. That doesn't mean that they're refuse to be openly communist but maybe they don't the party structures or something:P
2. RASH is a stupid name :P

The oppressed aren't radical leftists. And in my opinion the music is really hit or miss, especially when they use a damn drum machine. They do produce songs that everybody knows though, so that can be fun.
I know that they focus mostly on anti-fascism, but songs like "Government" and "Magistrate" are definitely left-wing. And I totally agree with you about the drum machine.
I definitely know what you mean. As an Oi! band, they had/have popularity rivalling that of the Cockney Rejects, and they could have done much more for RASH than they did/do.
Fawkes, are you from the states or somewhere in Europe?

I am.
You may be right, I haven't heard much about the skinhead scene where you're from.
Yeah, there have always been redskin crews. You don't need to tell me about them, I am very well versed in redskin history. Most of those crew organized under RASH when word started spreading, and there are very few independent redskin crews nowadays cause its in everybody's best interest to organize.
RASH is not a party and its silly to make such a comparison. RASH is a network of crews.
2. Get fucked haha.

Not even close. I actually read where I believe one of the Clash's former band mates said Strummer was actually rather right wing. He claimed that Strummer was a ffan of Thatcher and some other stuff I can't remember right now.
The Clash along with The Ramones and Sex Pistols are the three most over rated punk bands. These were pretty much the first of the punk bands...but when the went away touring punk started getting even better even more underground....and even more angry and political. I find it hilarious that The Clash started getting good reviews on their music when they started doing songs like Train In Vain ad more songs along those line as opposed to....Career Opportunities, Police and Thieves, White Riot or Tommy Gun.
I suppose it also helped that they became more radio friendly in the way they sounded. Their music was never really a total all out fuck you to society which made it go down smoother than some other bands that never got credit outside punk.
The Clash was okay.......more like what U2....who is a joke wished they were. Whjat I mean is The Clash was more about music than politics.....and they seemed to have a need to try to become popular for some reason.

This post has got me all hot and bothered.
Does the best leftest punk band have to be activily involved? Or just have kickass lyrics? Because the majority of 80's punk from the UK was basically a big 'fuck you' to everything, which of course involved politics.
And Ive just been thinking of all sorts of bands. The Stiff Little Fingers are an amazing politically minded band. Love those lads. Then you have the Toy Dolls, which have a political song or two, limited it is, they do have them. Then the Threats 'Writing on the Wall' is just pure awesomeness. The Skeptix "So the Youth', good God Im making in my pants. The Adverts had alot of awesome shit to say. Fuck! The Partisans, amazing band. Hell! Even GBH found a song or two speak out.
I even found an old Unseen cd (The Anger and the Truth) today and listend to it, which was quite pleasing.
Hell, even Toxic Narcotic has a point here and there.
But in the long run, I would definitly say Stiff Little Fingers is by far the "best leftist" punk band. With Angelic Upstarts, RIGHT BEHIND. God I love the song "Poland" and their version of "Bandierra Rosa".
Im gonna stop now, because I can keep going on and on. And here we go, I love Discharge and Broken Bones and the Finns Tampere SS. Or the god damn Wheels! Fuck this, Im stopping now.

>The Upstarts sell RASH and redskin merch, play shows organized by RASH and openly acknowledge thier relationship with the left-wing of the scene, but they never come out and say we are a red band
They had a song "Red Till Dead", which I thought was pretty obvious.
>As far as left wing skinhead music that should be represented on there:
Banda Bassotti
Brigada Flores Magon
Juenesse Apatride
Bolchoi
Redskins
Opcio K95
Only heard Brigada Flores Magon, which I thought were good. Berurier Noir, the French punk band, seemed to have a lot of Redskins following them in the 80s and providing security.
Since you seem to know your way around Oi/skinhead music, can you tell me anything about the politics of Komintern Sect and Trotskids? They have 'red' sounding names and Komintern Sect used some 'red' imagery, but I have no idea if they were for real or just toying with the aesthetics.

Greatest band EVER.
I voted for Aus-Rotten since their lyrics are far more sophisticated than the other bands in my opinion.

Dead Kennedys by and far. However, not sure why Black Flag and Bad Brains aren't included on the list.

Do you have a link to support your assertion that they were homophobic? Not doubting you, but I'd like something a little more concrete than just your word.
If they are, then that's a disappointment.

Best leftist punk band? It's a toss-up between The Clash and Dead Kennedys. DK for the sense of humour, Clash for musical adventurousness.
The Clash: first white artists to try hip hop, as far as I'm aware? ('The Magnificent Seven' and 'Lightning Strikes', both 1980).

Thanks for the link. I have the video "American Hardcore" and it doesn't go into that. I guess the book is more detailed.

Through their version of Bandiera Rossa, which I later followed up by downloading a few of their songs from LimeWire.

Panrkti had an early song that translated as 'Comrades Don't Count On Us' on a 70s Yugo-punk compilation. They intended to piss off the authorities with that title, but according to vocalist Peter Lovsin, "to our great disappointment, they never censored it."
Lovsin is reportedly a Yugo-nostalgic today.

Aye, Azra were another good Yugoslavian band of that period, although I don't think they were ever as openly political as Pankrti. Balkan is a song by them I would particularly recommend.

Also Termiti, Pekinska Patka, and Paraf.
If you like early Yugo punk, get the Novi Punk Val compilation which pretty much contains the cream. Pekinska Patka are sadly missing, though.
You can download it for free:

It's the comp that's got the Pankrti song I mentioned.
