Nepal has a history of major political changes but we are STUCK IN THIS BULLSHIT FOREVER, it seems. Let me give you the brief insight with what is going on here beginning with what Nepal has gone through
In other words, Let me brief you everything in a nutshell.
BACKGROUND
Nepal was united by a king called P.N. Shah. Then began the autocratic rule. Well, that was the period when most of the world had monarchies.
Then came 1840s. A new regime set up like a parasite to the monarchy and the nation. It was called the Ranas. Their autocratic and fascist regime of 104 years was a PAUSE for Nepal's development. Britain's dark period had ended and all the nations progressed, Nepal was where it already was a century back. This autocratic and feudal regime paralysed Nepal and its economy. One third of Nepal's land fell to India at that point
Then came 1953. Nepal's monarchy fought back. They had been fighting for decades but this point was the momentum. Everything worked out well, it seemed. The Rana rule was toppled off..
Then came multiparty party democracy, generously given by king Tribhuwan. He knew that when the world was getting more and more democratic, it wouldn't be right to fuse all powers into one body.
But this multiparty democracy within a short time became unpopular owing to the wrong-doings and criminal activities and corruption by the beureaucrats. The political parties had a really bad image which became the constant frustration of the people.
Then with not even the advent of a decade, the Tribhuwan's son, the next monarch Mahendra assumed autocracy and banned the political parties. At first the people were happy but with time, they faced gravers problems leading directly to rights. And with time they protested again.......
After 3 decades, the then king Birendra, known for his weakness and generosity submitted to the people.... ending the direct rule.
FROM THE 1990s.....
In 1990 AD came the big revolution in Nepal. The people fought for the ending of the Royal institution. The then King Birendra was a weak and generous person. Despite objection by other royals, he submitted his powers to the people. The people rejoiced for the beginning of a new Nepal.
So, Nepal, for the first time began a 'normal' period. It was already a third-world nation. The king had wanted to declare Nepal a peaceful country because it really was peaceful. But things already began to change even when the king submitted his powers and the constitution had been drafted by 1991. This constitution was said to be a radical reform by the then political parties. It must be noted that the political parties had close ties with the royal family and the people considered the king as a 'god'.
In the constitution, the king was cited a 'ceremonial monarch' but the constitution also noted that on special occasions the king could assume complete powers, in times of 'emergency' it stated. This was the backfiring point.
Some intellectuals then stated that this constitution is not proper and needs to be amended once and for all. This began some radicals going underground and declaring themselves REBEL forces.
This was also a reason for the establishment of CPN (Maoist) under Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai. They fought as rebel forces for more than a decade. Their contribution to make people politically conscious must be indeed applauded. But they, following the silver lining of Peru, were violent.
Violence is necessary for every revolution, they argued. And well, to a high extent they are right.
Now there was a civil war going on when King Gyanendra assumed powers. This guy was hated by the people from the beginning given the fact that it was rumored he was behind the Royal family massacre.
Let me take you back to June 2001. In a bloody massacre, most Royals including the king were killed and the accusation given to the crown prince. (who reportedly shot himself.. with a 1-metre long gun and shot himself at the back... imagine that ) but the people all knew that Gyanendra must have been behind this. So he was very unpopular.
After remaining in the throne, the bloody feudal Gyanendra increased his annual budget to almost 10 million dollars annually. He took over powers autocraticallly by overthrowing the PM and became more feudal than ever.
So, what had to be happened, a major political reform underwent which I believe most of you are updated with. King G HAD TO submit to the people after a mass revolution this past year. Now, the political scenario changed a lot with the once-radical-communists the Maoists becoming liberal and agreeing to a democractic process. They are making things ready for a new election....
Now let me bring you the deeper insight.
The truth is, the situation is not any better-off now. From more than a decade the nation has become crippled with strikes. These strikes are no minor strikes are mainly organised blankly for the entire nation. There becomes an economic shutdown almost once in every 3 days.
The advent of the revolution brought forward new armed groups meant to disturb the peace process. Most operating in the Terai (part bordering India and known as the breadhouse of the nation) have devastated nepal. These racist groups have more than 12 fractions all known for shoot-outs, burglary and criminal activities. They hate the people living in other parts of Nepal and blankly demand that they need a 'different nation'.
The YCL (Young Communist League) belonging to the CPN (Maoist) is also known for its notoriety in organising state closures....
Nepal, in other words, is stuck amidst politics.
The king and some Hindu extremists are figtinng back at the new governemt which is on the verge of declaring Nepal a seculiar republican state.
In case of Nepal, I am hopelessly optimistic, if a word as such occurs.
In other words, Let me brief you everything in a nutshell.
