Ian Mackaye has been saying for 25 years that he wrote this as an anti-racist song. He was the 19 year old son from a left-leaning family and the one of only a few white people in his Washington DC school and the victim of bullying because of that.

Despite him never being racist to anyone he often recieved treatment as if he was racist, hence 'guilty of being white'. This song was then covered by people with no clue what it meant and who turned it into a racist song. Mackaye is still a left-wing and anti-racist and runs arguably the most independent record label in the world.
