I'm trying to educate my gf in leftism (to the best of my abilities, i am no teacher) and I can't for the life of me remember why Capitalism is necessary for Communism. Was it to build up the Proletariat? God this is really bugging me, I should know this off the top of my head.

"But not only has the bourgeoisie forged the weapons that bring death to itself; it has also called into existence the men who are to wield those weapons — the modern working class — the proletarians."

If your interested you can read the first chapter of the communist manifesto Here (http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/ch01.htm) its a good read and explains alot of things :)

Well, sure you can create forms of communism in earlier social stages as well, but these forms will fail to provide everyone with a life where alienation of work is abolished, simply because the available energy is too low to even sustain everyone.

remember why Capitalism is necessary for Communism.
It's a necessary prerequisite of communism not only for economic/technological development but also for social development purposes.

Not necessarily. Objectively speaking, a totalitarian dictatorship with theocratic rhetoric and a very rapid industrialisation process could also lead to a revolution, but the socialism/communism which is created after will look weird.

Yes, but it the point is that unlike capitalism it didn't develop nor would it have been as sustainable as a capitalist system.

Personaly, I really don't think it is.

Really, you shouldn't have to go on some giant ideology crusade to save your girlfriend from the wretched grasp of capitalism. If she is working class, you can help her relate her own problems to the greater struggle. I don't think you should make a Marx scholar out of her; Marx isn't necessary for revolution.

Capitalism creates the infrastructure necessary for socialism; ends feudal property relations; establishes private ownership of the means of production; changes our approach to history, science, philosophy and most importantly; capitalism creates the INTERNATIONAL PROLETARIAT - The only class capable of ending class society.
