so now that I'm back on revleft (eh -- relationship problems, whatev) I figured I'd post this looong overdue thread on making your own markers.

i got a lot of requests asking for this thread a while ago, so i figured i'd let my fellow guerilla artists in on some secrets from the graffiti trade.

LESSON ONE: the "mop"

the writer's counterpart to the shank, the mop has long been a staple of all disenfranchized caligraphers from hoods barrios and ghettos all over the world. it's versatility and customisability, tho not as important for political scrawling as it as for the art of tagging, are the main reason for its prolonged existence.

which is why you should always make your "political scrawlings" works of art. i gots much  for these things.

here's how to make it :)

step one: you'll need a thing of shoe polish. they can of course be any kind, although in the writers vernacular they're often referred to as kiwi mops because of the prevelence of kiwi brand shoe polish. sorta like "kleenex" and "tissues"

step two: take off cap

step three: pull out sponge thing

step four: pull out nib thing

step five: empty the contents

step six: clean off the spongey nib part, this is important

step sev: put whatever ink you like in it :D

LESSON 2: the glue stick marker

this is basically the same concept as the kiwi mop, just a lil more complicated

note: flicks were origionally from an old recipe by an amazing writer named chillen, credit goes to him

first, gather your mats: you'll need a glue stick (the long tube kind -- i've made them from the short kind but there's no real reason for it other than just to you did -- basically the same thing but you'll need to seal off where it would leak), some rubberized tape, and some felt. usually just cut the felt off from a chalkboard eraser that you racked from school.

STEP ONE: unscrew top off and throw it away

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/1342/FLIX1336.jpg

STEP TWO: cut a hole near the bottom of the tube, this is so you can add more ink or thinned paint later

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/8223/FLIX1337.jpg

STEP THREE: take that felt strip and bend it in half. you can tape the ends together so it's easier to jam it into the tube.

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/3852/FLIX1340.jpg

STEP FOUR: twist the nib into the tube, you should prolly leave a bit of tape showing.

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/9987/FLIX1341.jpg

STEP FIVE: seal the nib so it doesn't leak using some superglue

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/7827/FLIX1345.jpg

STEP SIX: seal it completely by wrapping it really tight with your tape. steps 5 and six are very important, as you can imagine

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/671/FLIX1344.jpg

STEP SEVEN: leave a flap of tape after wrapping it, then glue it down

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/3231/FLIX1346.jpg

your shit is pretty much done now for the construction of it.

what you'll need to do next is test it, and for this step it's best to just fill it with water so you can see where you need to seal off any leaks. this is a good approach because it has the dual benefits of not wasting ink and not making a mess.

when you get it where you want it fill it with ink or really thinned paint. if your paint is too thick (like spraypaint) it will clog.

different types of ink/paint will yield different effects.

the thinner, the more drippy of course. this is good for drip effects but i don't know how much use that will be to y'all if you're not planning on tagging

this pic is what happens filled with black leather dye

and the results

and here's what happens filled with homemade krink

http://img105.exs.cx/img105/4585/FLIX1348.jpg

when you're finished, don't put that shit in your pocket upside down or it might leak and if you're not wearing baggy pants, be careful about sitting on it and squeezing out the ink. sometimes if i'm worried about my shit leaking it put it in a ziplock type plastic bag.

have fun kids, don't do anything illegal

that's basically it for making your own markers, if anyone has any questions about this or other marker or paint topics please ask

keep in mind that this is not the cleanest activity so don't do it anywhere where you are worried about spilling ink. also, you WILL get ink on you so you might want to wear gloves ;)
