Lemme just comment on how Rummel arrives at these numbers: he doesn't actually examine any facts.

He just averages a number of different claims without attempting to verify them.

So whoever lies the most, underestimating their own crimes and overestimating their enemies by the biggest margin - will be rewarded. It's completely ridiculous as a method of analyzing history.

Heck, the whole body-count thing is pretty strange anyway. Mass murder is mass murder, regardless of its exact size.

Really, rather than arguing about the size of these body counts, it's probably better to emphasize the difference between revolution and counter-revolution: the apparatchik regimes represented revolution. Their crimes were the repression of a privileged minority against the working class - not the revolutionary actions of the working class.

His method is very simple. He takes the demographic numbers of the Russian Empire 1890-1913, look at the population growth. Estimate that growth on the USSR 1917-1985. And then, he make a subtraction of the actual number of people from his estimations.

Voíla, 61 million purged and starved!

I could prove that Tage Erlander killed about 1 million Swedes using that model.
