Can someone give me a basic overview of what exactly Trotsky's theory of permanent revolution is?

I'm not an expert on Trotsky and am probably not the best on this forum to fill you in. However, seeing that no-one else has replied here is a brief overview of Trotsky's vision of the permanent revolution as I see it:

The theory is basically that communism cannot be successful in an isolated country. Therefore the immediate priority of any communist nation is to spread the revolution; only once the whole world - or a large section thereof - has joined can communism truly succeed. In practical terms this meant that, unlike Stalin, he felt that Russia post-Lenin should focus on spreading the revolution rather than consolidating it in Russia.
