I know somebody whose folks were farmers who were well paid for their profession. What do Communists feel about them? They contributed to the state.

 Could you be more be more specific? Well paid and better off relative to whom? Other workers?

What you might be talking about is Labour Aristocray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_aristocracy)... but you'd need to give more detail. Also what do you mean by "contributed to the state?" By paying taxes people contribute to the state.

Yes. I mean I was talking to somebody about it. When I say "contributed to the state" I mean they are farmers. They grew food.

Yes.
This type of comparison is meaningless because just about every worker is better paid relative to some other worker which is why Marxists classify based on their relations to the means of production rather than their salary.

I don't see how being a farmer necessarily contributes to the state unless they also work directly for it in some way. As for general views of them, Commercial farmers are usually classified as petite bourgeoisie because they own their own land (though corporatization of previously independent farmland is increasingly common) and thus are in a better position than the average worker who must depend solely on his or her labor power.

ok thank you, it's just I was telling my friend about left, and I convinced her a lot about this but I was sort of unsure about this!
Thanks!
