What are people's assessments of the ANC? Have they sold-out? Are they proof that power corrupts? When and where did they go wrong? Or are they still doing a decent job, considering the monumentality of their task?

I don't know a lot about them, but currently several unions are on strike against the ANC.
That's a pretty good indication that they've 'sold out'

They sold out once they made government. Many countries threaten a blockade (like Cuba) if they nationalised primary industries. To cover their revisionism they often claim they are still in the democratice revolution and it is not time for socialism.

basically their peace process there reaped benefits for the former leadership and did little to change the lives of ordinary people. The CP there has been very critical of their former allies.

I met an ex-ANC comrade who claimed there were still lots of political prisoners in gaol while the leadership were growing rich.

In an odd way the ANC sell out is echoed all too well in Sinn Feinns recent actions in Northen Ireland. Although the fundemental difference is that the ANC effectively won the struggle against aparteid as an open force because it was able to mobolize and organise the South African working class.

The ANC has sold out the South African working class, rather than the promised radical change in the functioning of society the ANC has been quite prepaired to take part in the South African ruling class' effort to sustain capitalism in South Africa by allowing a small layer of the black elite to join the ruling class.

The ANC sold out when they gave in to the IMF.

South Africa is rappidly moving towards a situation reminiscent of Zimbabwe. That's why they cosy up to Mugabe and refuse to condem his actions. They are hoping to use the Zimbabwean model of 'land reforms'. The country is very close to disapering down the spiral of a very nasty race war.

Unions belonging to COSATU which is in an alliance with ANC interestingly enough.

As for the ANC itself, much of its popularity was gained from its early anti-apartheid stance and its economic statements/commitments were and continue to be nothing more than rhetoric.

after Mandela left office and the anc they sold out... they no longer have the left stance that they did during and early after apartheid.... they have gone corporate and have yes sold out.

The ANC sold out long before Mandela left office. The man has a lot of stand in the left and in popular culture but if you look at his actions in office you can see quite clearly that he posed as fidel castro and yet played the part of tony blair. Under Mandela capitalism continued as before in South Africa, although with a thin layer of blacks in the ruling class. I'm quite sure Mandela even privatised things, the ANC certianly has in government.
