Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life
By Jon Lee Anderson
Pg. 92
"The blacks, those magnificent examples of the African race who have conserved their racial purity by a lack of affinity with washing, have seen their patch invaded by a different kind of slave: The Portugese.... the black is indolent and fanciful, he spends his money on frivolity and drink; the European comes from a tradition of working and saving which follows him to this corner of America and drives him to get ahead."

I have Jon Lee's book as well, as well as a few other Che books and from what I gathered, he trusted them completely. I mean, he went to Congo to fight a revolutionary war. He was willing to die for a country of African people. And during his time there, many of the people that he requested from Cuba were Black. If you're wondering if Che was a racist, he was not.

I used to own a copy of "A Revolutionary Life", and truthfully I don't remember not a single line that has to do with what that quote says.

This was a quote from the motor cycle diaries and was just his lines about what he saw how black people lived in one particular place and certinaly was not an indigment about all black people.

Yeah, that quote is in "A Revolutionary Life".
His Marxist views were not entirely crystalized and, as the book mentions, it was the typical opinion of white Argentinians who had never encountered, or been around coloured people.
His own ignorance really.
I can remember Marx also had some negative comments about coloured people. But hey, that was back in their day (aswell as Che) - they were not perfect and were a little backward.
Id agree with BB. He put his trust in them (although many were quite incomptent) during his guerrilla battle in Africa.
And also, during the Cuban revolution, as i remember, he served with many - and some were excellent fighters - and good friends of Che.
One of Che's female aquaintances (to under-rate exactly what might have went on) during the Cuban revolution was coloured. He was still "with" his partner and married at the time (what can a man do when stuck in a jungle for a couple of years without a fuck - he was only human).
But yeah, its a load of bollox and dosnt represent Che's later and experienced views.

There's mention of that in the Jorge Castaneda biography as well. Che was not a revolutionary Marxist at the time, and was indeed very ignorant about somethings. But history itself shows that he changed.

i think it is actually from the Congo campain, it is not an inditement of all black people just the rebel soldiers he incountered in the congo. i suggest sending the back a quote from malcom x- " You show me a capitalist and i will show you a blood sucker" or you could find stuff from the panthers.

That quote was very early on in a very long book; this was before Ernesto Guevara became "Che". His ignorance faded as his awareness of complete equality of the proletariat became more and more prevalent.

could you share that info please. This is not the first time I have heard that and although i have searched I have not found any thing really bad. Yes he did use the word nigger a lot to in context of the time saying "nigger" might not have been so wicked.
In many of his letters he argued that the freed slaves had to be granted political power. a great step for a racist in the 1800's.

I had a quick look and found this thread....

I havnt read it but it may give some details.
I dont think it should be surprising if Marx made, what we would call today, racist comments. It would have been a common belief.

No, it is from his time before he was even a Marxist at all, that's what it says in the Anderson book at least.

Uhm if I remember correctly there first was another president of Cuba after the revolution, however I think that was more of a formality after which Fidel himself took over the official role of president and stayed that for almost 50 years.
