It's one of the symbols of the anti-fascist movement. The flags represent a united front of marxists/anarchists.

The red and black flag is used by social anarchists, especially anarcho-communists and anarcho-syndicalists.

It features those 2 colors because red represents socialism/communism and black represents anarchism.

The one you mentioned is 2 flags of seperate colors (black and red) in a circle and basically represents what bleeding gums malatesta said.

There are no stupid questions!
It's the symbol of the Anarchist group; Antifa. Which used to be a soviet run organisation in 1930s Germany.

What does it mean when both flags are reversed (I mean the black flag over the red one, but the circle doens't turn red to compensate the 'loss' of red)?

Nothing, the arrangement of the colours is not really a significant issue.

In some areas the anti facist movement is more dominated by anarchists, so they prioritise the black flag.

Generally the anti facist movement is the one place where anarchists and marxists get along the best...

Except the idiot Maoists in Toronto who tried to slander some good comrades...

well i guess commies rather carry a flag with red in the front and the other way around.
there exist also red -red flags or black -black ones but i dont know that purpose other than being sectarian (and red on red at least looks pretty ugly too)

apart from that there is also a black -green flag, which is kinda the animal rights version. (though i find it hardly annoying to draw the connection between animal rights and anti-fashism)

fascists are against animal rights, like they're against human rights.

I don't think it means very much. When an antifa-group if started and elected into the AFA-network I think they'll choose whether they'll have the red or the black flag in the front. I guess grups dominated by marxists choose the red and groups dominated by anarchists choose the black.

In Sweden we have five sections with the red first and fourteen with the black first (all groups are not active though) and thus AFA Swedens most commonly used logo is the one with the black flag in the front. In most other countries I think, the red flag is in the front.

Not always true.

There's also one with blue and red flags, usually used by Anti-deutsche, I think.
