there's a football tournament taking place in the U.S. the Gold Cup 12 teams taking place. Cuba is one of them and after their second game in New Jersey against Panama 2 players left the hotel for the embassy and asked for asylum.
Univision the right wing shit of TV station based in Miami and L.A. has vowed to helped them try out for the U.S. National Soccer League...they also are making a big deal out of it.
"they deserve to have a better life and make a better living with their talent. they could fit in the Major League Soccer and get a big contract"

Maybe Univision made it look like cubans did it so it could turn it into pro-US right-winger propaganda?
based in Miami and L.A.
I think* we have Univision in Puerto Rico too; but it's slightly different in political terms.
*I should check my TV to be sure.

Who the fuck would want to be on the U.S. football team?
I'd at least defect somewhere that didn't suck.

No, I am pretty sure they were Cubans. They didn't defect to the US team, but I believe they requested political asylum.
And actually, the US, along with Mexico, has the best squad in the region in terms of soccer.

Why not Vietnam instead? Brazilian football player applied for Vietnamese citizenship some months ago (don't know if he got it) :D

This happens all the time in Scotland - Scott Brown fled the repressive regime of Hibernian fc to join the freedom loving Celtic...
Even if it was the Cuban team the lure of money will always attract people regardless of country and or ideology. Its just good propaganda to say its cos of tyranny etc.

That's not saying much! But then again, given the recent Dutch "successes", I probably shouldn't be talking too loudly. :(

Mexico quite consistently kicks the ass of the U.S. at soccer.

But yeh no big deal to be honest, they saw the dollar signs that can be made being a sports star in a big capitalist economy.

You know that the US lets Cubans in and wont deport them under the excuse that they all seek political assylum right? Most Cuban refugees that make it into the US are economic refugees (lets face it, Cuba remains a poor country compared to the US) or opportunists (who simply want to live the lifestyle of the rich and the famous) I guess.
The US lets them all in and does not deport them. Just see how the US would react if the Mexican football team would try to obtain US citizenship or legal stay like that...they would be put on a bus and sent to the US border, that or they would get shot by white power militas <_<

Although the US has grown considerably, beating Mexico more times than they have lost to them in the past couple years, the most hurtful being in the round of 16 in the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.

I've gotta agree with Soviet Pants. If you're going to defect, why not wait till you're playing a British fc, at least?

I'm assuming this is the Americans' MEN's team that is being trashed here? The US Women's Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Us_women%27s_soccer_team) is actually among, if not the, best in the world.

and so what? There is a very large ex-pat community in Cuban of artists, writers and others who "defected" to Cuba because "they deserve to have a better life and make a better living with their talent. they could fit in the Cuban Republic and get a big contract"
