I know that basically the function of a diplomat is to represent their nation abroad, but does this career necessarily have to be reactionary? Can one work as a diplomat yet still have socialist beliefs? Some of the perks of this job are really interesting but is it just plain reactionary?

It depends on what nation you're representing but generally yes.

Yes, but you do represent your nation's interests and policies so if those policies are exploitative or capitalist then that would make your personal beliefs insignificant.
