View Full Version : Big Brother racism

You may have heard that Big Brother contestant Emily was removed from the house for referring to fellow contestant Charlie as a 'nigger'.

She claims it was used in a 'jokey, friendly sort of way', which is clearly bullshit of the highest calibur. Racism is never a joke.

Do you think Channel 4 kicked her out because she was being racist, or just to seem like they were dealing with racism after the whole kerfuffle with Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty? If you want my opinion, it was probably the latter.

Also, it recently came to light that there were 'more racist' clips of Jade insulting Shilpa that Channel 4 deliberately did not broadcast. Further evidence that Emily was kicked out not on the basis of morals, but just to save Channel 4's skin.

That's basically how it will always work under capitalism. I mean, sure, there may be people producing the show who think that kind of behaviour is disgusting (especially when it's that blatant) but the bottom line is money/ratings.

I think you can really see this when more subtle racism is tolerated, because they can get away with it. Also, blatant homophobia tends to be acceptable because it's socially acceptable, so nobody is going to complain.

Is there a video fragment of this?
Because calling someone a nigger isn't per definition racism. I have friends I call 'nigger' for and who call me 'whitey' in return, I've got an asian friend I like to call names such as 'rice shittter' or 'chintok' or whatever and who calls me 'western dog' or other such names.
As long as it's between friends, it's no problem, so a video might help to explain things.

Bu doing it on national TV is very different to the context you described above.

And the contestent to whom the racism was directed does claim to have taken offence, although at the time she said she wasn't offended. You have to wonder whether she was offended but didn't want to say when Emily was still around, or if she wasn't offended but now Emily is gone is pretending to be in order to get the public vote, which would be absolutely disgusting, but it's still a possibility.

Yeah probably the latter. I mean it really doesn't look good for them does it? Even if she wasn't being racist, she should still be kicked out for the utter stupidity of calling a black woman a 'n*gger'.

Also it should be considered that, as she was kicked out, that's another opponent out of the house for her.

After the Shilpa Shetty thing BB had no choice but to kick Emily out.

She was doing an interview the other day, in which she said she would be voting Conservative...i fully support any criticism that goes her way.

This is an article concerning the Australian Big Brother show:

BB contestant ignites race debate

Big Brother is under fire yet again after coming to the defence of a housemate who made an apparently racist remark on Monday night's show.

"Why doesn't Big Brother put more Aussies in here? I don't think there are enough Aussies in the house," said contestant Andrew.

A spokesman for the show's producers, Southern Star Endemol, said yesterday that Andrew was just being "ironic" and was actually talking about how females are immune to eviction this week.

"(It was like saying) 'next it will be the Aussies', or 'next it will be the Poms'," the spokesman added.

However, several online forums have slammed Andrew's comments as racist.

2005 Big Brother runner-up Tim Brunero said on his website there was "inherent racism in equating Anglo-Saxon-lookingness to Aussieness which was offensive to anyone who doesn't look Anglo Saxon and is therefore by his logic not Aussie."

The racism controversy follows a recent uproar in India and Britain, when housemates on Big Brother UK harassed an Indian contestant because of her race.

Andrew, a firefighter from Melbourne, is one of four housemates up for eviction on Sunday.
