i heard some where that public high school started as a way to keep teens out of the job market during the depression, does anyone know whether or not this is true?

Origins of the public high school go back to early church Sunday schools. These churches gradually expanded their curriculum and how often they met. At this period of time, there were the only source of any formal education for most people. Within in time the communities began to start schools in the tradition of the church schools. These schools typically began to only serve children up to their lower teens, where they would begin work on the farm or in other occupations. Even later these community-run schools began to offer secondary school (high school) for students who chose to do it.

No, high school numbers didn't begin to really increase until the early 20th century as the number of children going to school increased (due to child labor laws) and as more preparation/selection was needed for college.

Kinda irrelevant, but this reminds me of when I was maybe 15 and at the bus stop coming home from school some old guy, probs an old-school class conscious worker from the miners strike days, asked me and my friend how old we are, and then told us he left school at 14 and that we stay at school too long, we're encouraged to go to university to get some worthless degree, all so unemployment could be kept down.

Abbie's definitely got a point, I don't have the answer but we ARE kept in education for way longer than necassary.

I am not sure about other parts of the country but there are some old ass public high schools in SoCal. I went to one of the schools for a competition and they had a statue honoring WW1 and it was engraved on the statue "The Great War" The school was made probably in the early 20th century.

Yes. I know several public high schools in my area that were constructed in the early 20th century or late 19th century.
