In some areas of leftist discourse I hear talk of 'passive consumption' and want to know more. I have a general idea of what this term means - consumptive activity that is not creative and active, for example, watching tv, but a clear and concise definition would be good.
What is the function of 'passive consumption'? How does it affect people's ability and willingness to question the system and prevailing ideas and act independently?
What is the relationship between passive consumption and the capitalist system? How best to challenge passive consumption?
I ask because I was watching The Edukators just now (for the 5th time) and in one section of the film the main chartacters plan to sabotage a tv transmission station so no-one in Europe can watch Tv - what would this achieve, why is it desirable?
