View Full Version : E. Elias Merhige's Begotten

Sacrificed

I posted about this in my introductory thread, and was asked about it, so I thought I might make a topic about it.

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Begotten) is one of my favorite films, right up there with Dark City. I was first introduced to it through a music video for a Marilyn Manson song (yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of the mansion-owning, Humvee driving pig; so sue me :P), and after having obtained a copy of it I watched it.

And rewatched it twice, for good measure.

Merhige has always been rather vague about its meaning; my own personal interpretation of it is probably more enlightening about my psychological state than anything the director intended.

Essentially, the film follows the history of a God as he literally disembowels himself, gives birth to himself, is worshiped, and dies. There is no dialogue, and the film is even more grainy than most authentic silents, but it's a hell of a trip when you're in the right mood.

Check it out.
