Statement

Power / O'Reilly Cumann
Irish Republican Socialist Party, Short Strand, Belfast.
May 25th, 2007.

An estimated 200 people attended an anti-drugs rally in the Short Strand this evening. The rally was called after the Republican Socialist Movement in the area had taken a hard line stance against drug dealers pushing their illicit dealings onto children and others.

Speaking after the rally Short Strand IRSP representitive Gerard Forward said We can see from the numbers assembled here that there is a clear opposition to drug dealers from within our community.

For too long working class communities have suffered under the plight of drug dealers often employed by the RUC/PSNI as informers. It is time the community took a stand against drug dealers.

The dangers of all drugs including cannabis should be exposed for all to see. Cannabis often serves as a gateway drug and aggravates mental conditions. Drug dealers are responsible for an array of social problems. From breaking up families to forcing teenagers to carry out robberies to fund their addiction.

Mr. Forward concluded The position of the Republican Socialist Movement as a whole is clear. We will not accept or tolerate drug dealers in our areas.

Statement ends.

Yeah, where i live, everyone and their mother, literaly, smokes marijuana. There are no torn familes becuase of it, def no fuckin robberies. Just a quite moutain town where everyone knows everyone and everyone smokes weed. When actual drugs like coke and that other stupid shit comes into the town, thats when people get the shit kicked out of them. The cops dont mind, they know everyone does it. As long as theres no hard drugs, things are at peace. It's not some evil addictive drug, in fact here it's brougt many people together that may not have ever met or spoken to one another. We all cant help but laugh at those rediculous above the influence commercials. We are above the influence, of a uni-cultural media that supports one way of life and bashes all others.

Marijuana doesn't cause mental problems (http://utteroutrage.blogspot.com/2007/05/marijuana-duck-duck-goose-same-old.html)
Marijuana not a gateway drug (http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/45535/)
Marijuana still not a gateway drug (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06339/743649-114.stm)

I suggest you also march against Alcohol, one of the most harmful drugs, peddled by worker-exploiting capitalist corporations!

Cannabis can be harmful to certain people, and really habit forming for others. One mans sugar is another mans crack. But literally, there are people who get addicted to anything. When I used to sell weed I knew a guy who would give me the shirt of his back for 0.5 grams when he had no $. But I also know people who can't stp eating junk food, who play video games for 48hrs straight, etc.

As for it causing mental problems, it is doubtful but it has been known to enhance problems (for example someone who is depressed can become more depressed). It has, however, also been known to work the other way around (easing depression for example).

Also, Rastafarians smoke it religiously. There were natives that chewed Coca leaves (as in Cocain) and natives that did Peyote. In moderation it can be used for meditation/recreational purposes, but like anything it can be abused.

Its understandable if theres a problem with crime affecting working-class people in the area or if the drug dealers are traitors of some sort, but...gateway drug? Please... ... Any activity can be habit-forming and the main way cannabis destroys families and hurts people is through the repressive drug laws in most places. This is a bit much.
