I'm kinda learning it. I highly recommend you download the Rosetta Stone program for any language. It's the best. It teaches you grammar and vocab, but by listening and matching and whatnot rather than studying lists of words.
You should also download French I, II, and III from Pimsleur. Where RS has vocab and grammar, Pimsleur will teach you how to think in another language, because you basically listen to a conversation, and you have a few seconds to respond to whatever questions they ask.
The BBC website has an excellent program called Ma France, I recommend you check it out.
If you want some books, avoid the For Dummies books, they aren't very good... just a French-English dictionary. And maybe a Berlitz book. And if you can "borrow" a textbook from a highschool, do it.
Also, once you've picked up a bit of the language, start watching French movies with subtitles, and try to just listen. This tests your comprehension fairly well.
Oh, and remember to download this stuff! RS and Pimsleur go for over $100 each, I do believe. Very expensive. Use either Soulseek or torrents.
Hope that helps :)
