I don't know if I should put this in religion/theology, but here it is:
Is discordianism an actual religion? does it have any true followers? does anyone really believe in it? I know they fooled around with it in Illuminatus Trilogy, and i read the Principa Discordia, but can I get more info on it?
It seems like an elaborate kind of joke but there probably are some followers of it somewhere out there.

It's a joke disguised as a religion disguised as a joke disguised as a religion disguised as a joke.

in Illuminatus, some people explain that they don't believe that Eris actually exists as a deity but more of an idea, and since religion is just idea, they can base their lives on what Eris represents, which in Discordianism is, well, discord
Is discordianism an actual religion?
In brief? No.
Although I suppose there are people out there who adopt a "discordian"-esque philosophical outlook. But in terms of a "religion", with all that that typically entails? No. There are no "discordians" out there.
Certainly, there's no one who has faith in discordianism as such; which, in practice of course, means it's far less likely for "discordians" to hold antiquated or otherwise discredited beliefs due to religious reasons.
I would imagine that "discordians" are also less likely to be immediately opposed to the precepts of communism, although I've no evidence in support of such a notion. It does ring rather intuitively true however.

YAAAY im a fuckin discordian! 5 tons of flax, *****!!!
well... not really. discordianism, as in pure discordianism, is more of a worldveiw than a religion (people also say this about buddhism). Eris isn't considered by many to exist in any sort of way, but also, she definitly does. eris is true. eris is false. eris is irrelevant. HAHAHA!!!
basically the serious part of discordianism is the Order vs. Disorder stuff, and eris and Aneris are used to represent that.
Myself, i'm discordian neopagan, ie i beleive in eris as an aspect of nature, but not a goddess, at least not for me.

Its a bunch of made-up nonsense.
Yep. But Discordians think Real Sense is also Made-up Nonsense.
People exposed to behaviour inspired by discordianism is sometimes forced to reevaluate their assumptions regarding this and other authoritative polarities. Or not, as it may be.

exactly. well, sorta. in fact, many of us spend a good deal of time explaining Discordianism to Organized Religion types, just goading them to say "it's a bunch of made up nonsense" so we can laugh and say "well, it IS a religion, after all"

If you don't believe in Eris try praying to her some time. She's not an idea, she's a divine being with divine powers who is much readier than most to answer prayers.
Just because Discordians, unlike most religions, have a sense of humor doesn't make us any less real, or any less devout than followers of any other belief.
I also would say that we are less likely than Christians to accept communism, considering that Communism is rather explicitly endorsed in the bible, while it is not endorsed in any of the Discordian texts.

Please disregard that message. Discordianism does not exist. It was all a part of a disinformation campaign by the Illuminati to make liberals look silly. Move along. Nothing to see here.

I would call it a spoof of religion, but all religion is a spoof. Since post-industrial civilization, what major religions that remained became the subject of mockery for many skeptics . They reason, if religion is ridiculous, let's make up our own ultra-ridiculous religion. Discordianism, I would guess, is one of these. The Flying Spaghetti Monster another.
I would certainly hope these idiots don't really believe that nonsense.
I must admit though...and please don't laugh....but I hope the Illuminati is real. Those guys are awesome.

When I was an adolescent, I thought Discordianism was actually about worshipping the Greek goddess of chaos and war, so I was immediately attracted. Then I realized it was just lame-ass petit-bourgeois pomo dadaism for half-assed Wiccans and bored hipster pseudo-pranksters, and promptly rejected it in favor of a far more coherent spiritual philosophy.
Irrelevant piece of trivia about Discordianism: According to Robert Anton Wilson's Cosmic Trigger, there were militant black nationalist Discordians during the 1960s who took credit for a few insurrectionary bombings. (Then again, in the same book he claims the Symbionese Liberation Army was a psy-ops intelligence-front without any evidence, so don't trust his LSD-addled account of history)
Another irrelevant piece of trivia about Discordianism: Back in the day there was a guy on one of the larger Discordian message boards who used to complain about how everyone else on the forum was a Wiccan hippie and how Discordians back in his hometown were all "gangsta-ass niggas"
