Could anyone point me to some texts on the Hungarian Revolution to help me understand this event completely? I know it was against Soviet occupation of Hungary, but that's about it. What was the political stance of the revolution? Where was it trying to go? Was it leftist at all or just capitalist?
Also, I'd like to find out some of the successes and drawbacks of the short-lived revolution.

There were workers' councils formed and they took over control of the factories. Andy Anderson's book Hungary '56 is a good account.

There was a good three-part series on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Liberation, the newsletter of the Communist League in Britain.

People of all political tendencies participated. As to its importance, C.L.R. James wrote that the Hungarian Revolution "destroy[ed] once and for all the legend that the working class cannot act successfully except under leadership of a political party".
edit: I just noticed that this is my hundredth post. And it only took a year and a half…

I believe what it proved that the Soviet Union was not a working class government.
