I had always thought it to be a Maoist movement, such as with The Shining Path, however I recently heard it described as an anarcho-syndicalist-inspired movement (this was from an anarchist letter btw)

Your thoughts...

No, its an autonomous movement, all though there are communists, anarchist, liberals, etc. in the Zapatista movement.

The Zapatistas as a maoist movement with a personality cultus who dont give a shit about the local population? Nah...the EZLN are definately NOT like the Sendero Luminoso. The Zapatista movement is actually there for the indiginous population and actually remains loyal to the wishes of the people instead of being concerned about the cultist of some moronic leader who likes to party a lot while his people are dying...

I'm pretty sure they gave up their active revolutionary army and have joined politics.

Their origins lie in the Maoist movement. Marcos and many of the people who helped organized the EZLN were originally from a 60s-era Maoist group called Linea Proletaria (Proletarian Line). Since then the nature of the movement has changed of course. It could probably be described as anarchist in nature, although it really doesn't have any ideological niche it neatly fits into. For one thing it incorporates a great deal concerning the indigenous identity of the people of Chiapas. At the moment the 'Otra Campana' is centered around breaking up the neoliberal concensus in Mexican politics and fostering a new mass politics, so to speak. I would probably agree with Hasta and characterize it as an autonomous movement.

Doesn't make much sense considering that the Zapatista movement is primarily a peasant/rural one.
