KGB, CEKA ,NKVD...
what common people feared most
what leaders feared most
a suppression instrument to protect the existence of the state itself
paranoia?
probably
as communist leaders saw everywhere nothing but enemies
are they necessary in a communist state?
i don t think so
order and progress can bemantained without threats
enemies(if they exist )can b supressed more discretely
I think security services are just a bodyguard of the leader and an expression of their fear of death...

In Socialism, absobultly yes. In Communism, well you need some sought law enforcement. I mean what are you going to do if another Washington sniper turns up?

The question ought to be "what kind of security forces" would be useful under communism and what kind would be dangerous or even catastrophic?

"Professionalization" is the hallmark of "security" under capitalism. People make CAREERS out of being cops, military personnel, internal security "experts", etc. The "professional" under capitalism does not concern himself with the social consequences of his daily work; he's just doing his job within whatever constraints might exist at any given moment. He "carries out his orders" no matter what they might be.

So, if he is ordered to apprehend a random sniper on a killing spree, he works as hard as he can to do that. If he is ordered to round up the jews to be executed, he works as hard as he can to do that, too. To him, it's all in a day's work.

This strongly suggests that we communists should advocate and implement the de-professionalization of all state functions involving violence or potential violence against the citizenry. Yes, you can, if you wish, do this kind of work for a few years...but you are not allowed to make a CAREER out of it; you are not allowed to develop any kind of "professional detachment" from the social consequences of your work.

Violence or the threat of violence is DYNAMITE in every social order. We should HANDLE WITH CARE.

im with redstar, very nicely put, and I too believe that a de-professionalization of military and police would be very helpful

I don't agree that secret services are jus "bodyguards of a leader" as you've put it. There must be some intsrument for monitoring what ppl are doing. Comrade RW said it alright bout the riots and opposing groups

People have a right to protest, riot, form opposition groups, etc. If the capitalists didn't allow us to this, we would call them totaliarian nazi fascists.

If our system is better then capitalism, why should we oppress our opposition? Are you afraid of an outdated system? A communist revolution would never happen untill it had the support of the majority (if it didn't, it desserves to fall). If the majority already agrees with us, why should we fear the capitalists?

We have seen what has happened to places like Russia where power was concentrated into the hands of a few people. If became fascist and more curropt then any capitalist country.

Chairman Mao spoke of a Peoples Army, and that should be the police force. People should organize themselves in millitia and police forces to democratically solve problems. This is essentially mob rule, but Democracy by definition is organized mob rule.

Under true communism there would be no need for any armed forces or the like. People would do things because they wanted to and if those wants confilcted with anothers they would sort it out themselves. The concept of family, may or may not survive this. If people wish to live like "in the olden days" well they could like in onlcaves. But with everything for free, you could take what you wanted, there would be no need to hord as there would always be enough. There would be no government to restrice people, no laws, the people themselves can police themselves.

true communism? am I missing something?

there has been in existance for 500 years the same enemy, one asks to believe otherwise and one says one is taken for a fool.

until people can self-govern themselves there will always be a need for task forces of security.
