La Commune is an excellent movie. Peter Watkins took around a 100 non-actors and assigned to each of them a specific role in the Parisan life of 1871, everyone had to investigate their part in the Commune.

In the movie there are two television channels: Commune TV, run by the workers for the workers & TV Versailles wich is like a sort of state television that tries to discredit the commune and spread lies. The people in Paris are constantly being interviewed so you get a real good picture of what was happening in Paris at that time.

la commune is on DVD and VHS. But get the DVD because there is a documenty about makeing it, and making documentries in general that is worth the price alone. And yes at six hours it is long, longer still if you don't speak french, but it you know anything about the commune it is watchable and can keep you at it. And really one hour a night is not long, if you can borrow it for that long. Remimber there is interlibrary loan for you who have no place to rent it (just like blockbuster would have it) and can't aford the $30.00 or more to buy it.
The old dramatisation of the commune "new babylon' is out on DVD in the Pal foremate in England. I'm sure we didn't get pal here so America would be forced to watch Hollywood. Any way, the old VHS version of 'new babylon' is pretty rough. The DVD, should we ever be allowed to see it in America should be very watchable. It comes with a long booklet and I should add that the film is in Black and white and is silent. but even if were a talkie it would be in Russian and you would still have to read the subtitles. The VHS has a horrible sound track. I have high hopes that the oridgial sound track by (foregive me) Sha-ta-kov-vich will be on the DVD.
