Have you seen it? What you think? Saw it today and though it was very good.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468489/

Basically about a left wing teacher that's suffering from addictions to crack and other drugs. The one thing I was wondering throughout it was whether the director was relating his addictions and pretty crappy life as a whole to his left wing ideology and the isolation this caused. Even the way at the end (and I warned you not to read this if you haven't seen it!) he shaves off his beard, presumably signifying some type of settling down or having a less extreme way of life. It kind of felt like there was something wrong with his beliefs and because his beliefs were so far from the norm he suffered from these personal problems. The film doesn't offer any other explanation.

Now maybe I've taken this up all wrong but that's the way I saw it. Anyway what I'd take from it is that if you're going the path of the left (and I presume you are) it's best not to do it alone, like the character in this film seemed to be doing. It just makes you doubt yourself and you don't get the reassurance and hope that fellow comrades can give.

Other than that part I found the overall story line to be a fairly good portrayal of drug addictions, but on writing this I don't think it even comes close to Requiem for a Dream.

I don't really think that his revolutionary convictions had much to do with the storyline except to portray him as an atypical teacher.
