Hello, if any1 could point me to a earlier thread discussing the current living conditions in China in comparison to the pre Deng policies? Or can anyone discuss them right here (It is just I know I have seen a thread before but I couldn't find it through search) What were the implications of pro-capitalistic policies on the workers? Thanks

Can't think of any topic right now off the top of my head but try the search function.

As far as living conditions go, they have falled in both the rural and urban areas for the workers and farmers. The Deng and Jiang era saw the abolishment of the old Iron rice bowl reforms that were the foundations of the old socialist system. With the free market reforms and with the greater focus on developing the urban areas, the countryside floundered and conditions for the urban workers decreased as capitalism and increased privitization occured.

Things are basically as you would expect given the capitalist "reforms". The elite are becoming extremely wealthy and a new middle class is emerging who enjoy a standard of living about the same as you would find in the west. Meanwhile more than half a billion people find their standard of living decreasing as the old programmes to keep them above substinence level vanish.
