fear is used by the media to make you forget the real problems. "g w bush warns of another terrorist attack" while poverty increases and the environment gets ruined. and, oddly enough, there is no attack to speak of. hmmm...

Fear, such a strange emotion. One that keeps us in oppression and ignorance but at the same time can keep us alive.

I agree! One of the biggest fears that advertisers play on is fear of social ostricism. Your underarms stink! Your teeth are piss-colored! Your bathroom smells like a cat box! Your clothes look like you shop in garbage cans! Your kitchen floor makes roaches vomit! Etc., etc., etc.
They don't SAY these things outright; because then people would catch on to how stupid these messages really are. But, man, can they drop some heavy hints. THUD!

Fear..., against what?
Fear is one of those few emotions animals -including humans- have to be able to withstand dangerous situations.
Maybe fear is one of those few emotions in today´s stupid societies that make us feel alive.
Besides, fear can also be real fun...

Fear can be caused by something so simple, so weak, but yet, can be so powerful.
look at the situation in Nepal or Israel/Palestine. Terrorist actions by the extremists on both sides produce strong galvinization of an otherwise independent society. When 2 factions are fighting a war in the midst of a populace, the populace becomes first and for most concerned with their safety; as such, they tend to divide and pick sides. Both sides represent strength and security to the people, and so they throw their support behind the side which they see as their best representative in the conflict; even though in times of peace, the populace would be repulsed by that group's ignorant, violent rhetoric. A "desperate times call for desperate measures" kind of mentality.
What the people don't realise is that they are more powerful than both sides, and that if they rose up, and stood for themselves, they would achieve their dreams.
But their fear usually hinders that possibility.
To make an analogy out of the "good vs. evil" religions of the world, think about this:
God and The Devil would have no power if there were no humans for them to influence or control. These leads to the realization that true power does not lie in the hands of leaders and deities, but in the people they seek to rule over. The people are the source of their power. The people need to realize the power and strength they truely have, but to do this, they must over-come their fear.

As Machiavelli said, it is better to be feared than loved.
People will not respect a loved ruler. But they will respect a feared ruler. Back to my great example- Vlad the Impaler. He proves this.

in the end, fear is merely a tool to make up for people's lack of intelegence. without fear, all the stupid people would die.
but, for those who happen to be above the need of fear, it is a hinderance.
one thing to note though, everybody is stupid at some point in their lives. thus, fear has helped everyone at least once.

fear breeds hate; hate breeds rebellion. a feared leader is doomed to die young. you want fear & death or love & life?

I agree with KickMcCann. Fear itself will prevent change, though also brings about unnecessary change.
Fear can make a man respected, but fear does not make a good man.
