I love soul, but unfortunately I am pretty ignorant of the genre. I love stuff like Vicki Anderson, Lyn Collins, etc. Can anyone give me some suggestions for people or songs to check out? Youtube links would be even better!

I'll start, how's that?

Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On / What's Happening Brother"

Lyn Collins - "Never Gonna Give You Up"

Marva Whitney - "Things Gotta Get Better"

My two favorite songs aren't on youtube, but you should check out David Ruffin's solo song "My whole world ended the moment you left me" and Vicki Anderson's "in the land of milk and honey" (a classic!)

Are you sugesting songs for youself?

David Ruffin's solo album David is a great album, although out of print and impossible to find. His version of I Want You Back is great.

The O'Jays Ship Ahoy is nice.

Pretty much any Stylistics album, The Original Debut Album, Round 2, or Rockin' Roll Baby.

The Shirelles, although I hate best of albums, their 16 Greatest Hits is pretty, well, great.

Anything by Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding, or Sam Cooke.

The Manhattans self titled has their cover or Earth Wind and Fire's "Reasons", another sweet song.

Curtis Mayfield's "Curtis" is jampacked with goodness like "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", "Move On Up", "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go".

Aretha Franklin's Young, Gifted and Black.

Donny Hathaway's debut Everything Is Everything and Extension of a Man.

I dig Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Jackie Wilson

Also check out some funk... Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Parliament, Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone, The Meters, Prince kinda

If you can get your hands on the DVD of Marvin Gaye's performance at Montreux in 1980, I highly recommend it

Not exactly. Just some stuff I know I like and others should like. I've been a fan of the genre for a bit, but just don't really know much about it. Different artists, subgenres (mephis soul vs. funk crossover, etc.). Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check 'em out!

Ooo, Wilson Picket is the bomb (link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdi1_Es85fA)).

As far as funk stuff goes, I like the funk/soul crossover stuff a bit. PBS did a great documentary on the history of funk a while ago. It got me into Parliament. But I really like the more melancholic soul (like memphis soul? could someone clarify the soul subgenres?). It gives me goosebumps.

I can't post MP3s here, but if someone wants to trade mp3s over IRC or Soulseek, hop onto livechat when I'm there sometime. If Hampton or Dr.RP are interested, I have Vicki Anderson's songs from Jame's Browns rareish 2 vol. message from a soul sister on mp3.

Sam Cooke did A Change is Gonna Come, which is maybe the best soul soul song ever recorded

Isaac Hayes, Bobby Womack, Barry White and the Ohio Players are some of my recommandations.
